It is known that his father was persecuted for anti-Nazi sentiments. He was held prisoner by the Americans, but released as he was an ordinary soldier.

Prior to that he was in the Hitler Youth, which is a stronger indicator of Nazism than joining the Wehrmacht - I gather many people in the army were not Nazi sympathisers, but the Hitler Youth were the junior branch of the Nazis as I understand it.

His apologists say it was compulsory to join and he was only in the "movement" for a while. However in our paper it quoted a contemporary from the same place who said he could have resisted - others did. It didn't however indicate whether the ones who resisted are still alive.

Yes, some of them still are. Athough he was not a card-carrying member of the National Socialist party in Germany of the time (he was in his early teens), and he did go AWOL from the Wehrmacht, the stories of his contemporaries that did resist the evil make poignant reading. Well, it didn't affect his chances of election any.

346748 2005-04-20 04:08:00 Of course his age was the deciding factor. They don't want another one lasting 26 years. Those cardinals all have ambitions. ;) Graham L (2)
