346669 2005-04-19 22:13:00 Okay,

Posting from Ark Linux 2005.1 SR1.

Installation was so simple even you could do it Metla!

It didnt pick up WinXP on the other partition, however this wont be an issue if its a single-boot system.
It did however leave the XP partition in tact and put a nice little icon on the desktop to access it. Lucky me.....

Installation was done in approx 10 minutes, and if you already have unpartitioned space you could litterally push [Enter] 3-4 times and end up with a working installation.

This was my first experience with KDE-3.4, and havent used Ark Linux in a while.
Sound server keeps crashing (Im sure they were removing aRts in KDE-3.4), but when playing anything in Kaffeine it works fine.

Fonts in Konqueror are butt ugly, but I'll fire up Firefox shortly, and check anti-aliasing.

I love being able to play my mpeg4 movies out of the box, its brilliant! I love that with all linux distros!
Comes with K3b which is good, what I'd expect to see from a KDE-based Distro.

Looks slick, and impressed even me being a long-time linux user. VIbrant colors Wow'd my father who's been staring at the more dull-themed Xandros system lately.

The additional Software CD has Firefox, Thunderbird, IM applications, other Firewall tools, Games (Wesnoth).... but over all this distro just doesnt feel quite right.... Almost everything but the kitchen sink (and XMMS, at least it should have been replaced with Amarok).

Just something about it, Im not too sure.

Ah well, Im off to try making my own live CD again. Im not giving up.

Maybe I should give Mepis a whirl tonight!

Chill.

346670 2005-04-19 23:19:00 Greetings one and all, I have been mulling over the possibility of making a Linux box available and the issue of compatibility rears its ugly head, so I am asking for suggestions as to Linux safe hardware (suggestions based on fact/knowledge/experience would be preferred over guesswork :D )

I'm running FC3 on an elcheapo elitegroup laptop. All works well EXCEPT the sound. There has been various attempts to fix this but all have failed. Apparently this is a common FC3 bug, and sound works fine with other distros. If sound still doesnt work with an FC3 install after you change the default muted setting, then probably to best give up and move on!

346671 2005-04-20 00:19:00 Mepis looks good and is easy to use and it sounds like Ark is the same, but they are smaller named distro's without the huge distro specific support the others can supply. Again, it really depends upon who your intended market is and would they require a lot of hand holding.

346672 2005-04-20 00:28:00 Who is your intended market with this system Metla? If you make it too budget like you may put off people who are looking for a better quality system.

The intended market is those that stick their heads through the door and ask for the price of a cheap Linux box, from conversations I have had with them they tend to already own 2 or 3 Windows boxes and treat computers as a hobby, but aren't willing to spend the time and effort required to source individual components or distro's,they want something that they can buy and have working as soon as they get it home,it would be treated as a secondary box rather then a replacement for their pride and joy.

They are also the last people in the world who would take their current boxes into a shop to be fixed but are inclined to make a holy mess out of other peoples boxes with their home remedys that seem to be based on pure fantasy and magic mushrooms (infact its the people who they help that tend to bring in their comps to get fixed)

Intended retail $600

346674 2005-04-20 10:34:00 Hmmmmm...

I grabbed the free version of Xandros overnight, tried to install it earlier today at work, it ran through the process then it said to eject the cd and press enter for reboot, then it complained of no boot source.

3 attempts later it died by the hammer, Please note that in fine tradition I did not read any documentation, instructions, forums or faq's at all.

So, now I'm getting the free version of Mepis (sounds like a disease, what crack fiend names these things), the servers are laughable, only 557 hours to go.....

The latest is called SimplyMEPIS-3.3. I found that this version was not the easiest to locate on the list of mirrors.

Try this mirror, I got good speeds off it:

The ISO is dated 25/02/05.
