| 650422 | 2008-03-18 07:02:00 | Hi. Today I bought a wireless router, a Dick Smith XH 9950 ADSL 4 port one. The principal reason I boiught it from DS is because of their no-fault return policy - I anticipated problems. Lo and behold, I got the damn thing working perfectly. I even got it to call itself "ptopz" instead of "router", and my son's i touch sees it under that name. The trouble is, I cant for the life of me figure out how to put a password on it so everyone in the street can't access my bandwidth. I played around with the SSID authentication settings but all except "disabled" prevented the i touch from accessing it. (The PC is connected via Ethernet). Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks |

| 650423 | 2008-03-18 07:08:00 | You'll have to put it on something else besides disabled. Like WEP / WPA or whatever the router and Itouch supports. And if both let you use a channel, change both to the same channel |

| 650425 | 2008-03-18 07:23:00 | Thanks. The wep/wpa options require me to enter strings of things I have no understanding of. I am using vista, but am pretty dumb at this, and don't know how to "post here". Do you mean a screen dump of the (web page based) configuration options? |

| 650427 | 2008-03-18 07:29:00 | The string of numbers can be anything. Depending on which option you choose, u have to put in so many characters. Just make sure whatever you put in the router, is the same on the Itouch. You can press print screen on the keyboard, which takes a snapshot of whats on the screen. Then you paste it into sme kind of graphics program, if u have one. Then save it then upload it here (imagef1.net.nz) Then copy and paste the link the above site gives u back here. |

WPA PSK or WPA2-PSK would be better. WHAT does the Itouch give you? It'll have to have something, if you dont want anyone using your bandwidth This may help (docs.info.apple.com) it looks like this is where you go to set the security Settings > Wi-Fi > Other (under Choose a Network) and then enter the Wi-Fi Network Name (SSID) and select your Security setting |

The encryption type (whatever you choose - ie: WPA 2 PSK etc ) / channel, and password MUST be the same on the router and the Itouch, so they can communicate. Both may generate a series of numbers automatically as well |
