650410 2008-03-18 01:02:00 I was telling my mate Grant how helpfull people have been with the problesm I had inserting new RAM.
He has an IBM Thinkpad Laptop and can not start it up. He is running
Win 2000 on it and as he bought it second hand , he does not have the installation disks.
He has left it at my place to sees if anyone can help us get it going. It boots up to where he has to enter a password and then he gets a box that says

Log on to Windows
and it had" Administartor" in the top box and is waiting for the password in the second box
Is there anything he can do to get the PC going again ?

650411 2008-03-18 01:09:00 Has he tried Administrator (note the capital A) as the password?

Don't mean to patronize him, but often, the default password is pretty obvious!

650412 2008-03-18 01:26:00 Why didnt he ask the person he brought it off??

Unless it was stolen !

Try this (home.eunet.no)

You'll have to burn it to cd its an ISO

Or get the floppy version

650413 2008-03-18 18:39:00 He has owned it for some time but was "mucking about" with the settings when he created the problem. I have tried some of the obvious passwords but have not found what would appear to be the one that works. Swampy (2426)
650414 2008-03-18 19:04:00 Well, worst case scenario, if he can't get get around this, I'll burn him a copy of Win 2000 if you'd like - provided he's got a legit COA! nofam (9009)
650415 2008-03-18 20:35:00 Swampy - a couple of years ago I had to try recover admin passwords for half a dozen W2k computers. After much frustration I finally found a programme that did it perfectly. It's a bit technical, similar but a bit easier (from memory) than the process used on the link that Speedy gave.

Problem is I'm buggered if I can find the website again now. However I have got all the files on a disk which I'm happy to send to you via email. The total size is 3 megs.

What you'd need to do is burn the files to a bootable CD. Then change the boot sequence in the BIOS on the PC to boot from CD first. Then reboot the computer with the disk in the drive.

If interested PM me your email address, or if anyone can suggest a free file upload/download service please advise. I know there's a few good one's but I can't recall them.

I know there's a few good one's but I can't recall them.Ok I found an upload site (yousendit.com). So if interested, still PM your email and I'll upload for you. Greg (193)
650417 2008-03-18 22:08:00 Ok I found an upload site (yousendit.com). So if interested, still PM your email and I'll upload for you.Update... yousendit.com is crap. Just tried to upload a folder and it wouldn't accept it. Tried to upload the individual files and it requires you to pay for the service.

So if anyone wants the files PM me with your email address and I'll email them to you as an attachment.

Ok, I just found the required files a bit earlier and another PF1 member downloaded and burned a bootable disk and advised me he's successfully made it work.

So, go to either of the links below, download and follow their instructions. You'll need to know how to burn the disk from an ISO etc etc. I've done it so rarely I can't give comprehensive step-by-step instructions, but we'll help where we can.
