2008-03-16 22:03:00 | WinXp Home HP Pavilion a 1305a will only boot if I pull the CMOS battery out for 1 hr and then put it in. I have tried a new battery with the same results. have tested the ram: ok

2008-03-16 22:09:00 | Did you re-configure the BIOS, AFTER you pulled the battery out?? | Speedy Gonzales (78) | |
2008-03-16 22:13:00 | No, --- please explain | NZHawk (4093) | |
2008-03-16 22:16:00 | Well if you pull the battery out whatever was configured in the BIOS is lost. Like what boots first, may default back to the floppy. Not a hdd. And if a system supports USB 2, (if USB 2 is on the mobo), the slowest option maybe the default option in the BIOS. Which will have to be changed, if you want USB 2 speed in Windows. The settings will have to be re-configured then saved.

2008-03-16 22:46:00 | Speedy, have reset the bios, booted smooth as after that, but subsequent boots failed. stops after identifing the hard drive. I have removed all cards & other drives (cd...)

2008-03-16 22:54:00 | Change the IDE cable on the hdd, or make sure its in properly. Then see if it boots up all the time Is the hdd the only thing on this IDE connection?? The hdd could be failing. I just had a similar prob with an IDE slave hdd I had in this case. It kept stopping at the post screen (after it detected this slave hdd), it kept on saying the SMART command had failed. (for this slave hdd) It either stopped after the hdd had been detected, (at the post screen), or the XP logo would come up, but it wouldnt boot into XP. So I removed the hdd, and chucked it in the bin. Its been fine since

2008-03-16 23:05:00 | changed the ide cable. tried a new/used hard drive rechecked it is identified in the bios try booting to safe mode cycles through the boot cycle

2008-03-16 23:14:00 | Make sure its on its own IDE connection. (And not connected to the same IDE connection on the mobo with a CD) Jumper it to Master. Go into the BIOS and set the Master IDE to AUTO so the BIOS detects it, save the settings, then reboot. Does the new / used hdd you installed have anything on it? If it doesnt have drivers etc for the mobo thats installed, it'll probably have probs booting into XP or crash.
