| 347297 | 2005-04-21 10:57:00 | [I more or less stole this post off another site but thought it might provoke some interesting discussion here...] Does this (computerworld.co.nz) mean that finally the ComCom are doing something? What will Telecom have up their sleeve? <snip> The Commerce Commission has handed TelstraClear what the telco wanted as an access seeker for reselling Telecom's DSL products. In a draft determination released yesterday afternoon, the Commission concluded that Telecom faces "limited competition in a national wholesale market the provision of broadband services," presumably because the incumbent still has a last-mile monopoly and thus is the the only game in town. <snip> It's only a draft determination so it could all change but basically it says Telecom has to let TelstraClear (and maybe others later) sell any DOWNLOAD speed of JetStream it can at a realistic price point AND has to offer the exact same set of technical paramters to TelstraClear that it offers to Xtra... so no fudging it on latency, jitter etc... the full determination is here (www.comcom.govt.nz) (BE WARNED: it's turgid): |

| 347298 | 2005-04-21 11:21:00 | ComCom has been known for it's dynamic and unpredictable gymnastic abilities in the past. Personally I suspect the coach has been feeding it drugs which enhance this ability but have the unfortunate side effect of completely erradicating consumer awarness and common sense, prerequisites for ComCom one would think. No dig at the 128kbs upload speed, is that short sited or did it simply get kicked aside in the interests of the bigger picture. Anyway, it certainly would be very nice if it all came to fruition some time soon. Do you have any timeline for the final determination and implimentation of any changes? |
