1424808 2016-08-23 23:31:00 My PC, which Wainui built about 8 years ago started behaving oddly yesterday.

Even though I have the power settings set to always on, I came home to find it in standby mode.
I woke it up, and started closing the open programs. I'd almost closed them all when Windows decided to log off and **** down by itself.

I cleaned out a bit of dust from the case, reseated the RAM.

Windows starts up normally, but then a few quick beeps after a minute or so and then logs out and shuts down.

Any ideas? Note It's not connected to the net and hasn't had any new external usb drives etc attached for a few months so I'm ruling out any viruses.

1424809 2016-08-23 23:42:00 I'd see Wainui about the warranty!!!

(Shelters from WT's reply!).

I was going to, but I figured it's a long walk and I can't carry that many beer bottles without shaking them

it actually shuts down cleanly, nicely ??
if it was the power supply, it would just turn off/reset instantly
do you have a UPS connected to it (via USB) ?

what OS: Xp , Win7 ? Win10 ?
check that standby mode is turned off, and hybernate is also turned off .
"allways on" still allows standby in XP.

thats appalling reliability right there , only 8 years .... My abacus is 30years old without a single issue
ask if you are covered by the CGA
:-)

1424814 2016-08-24 04:06:00 Come on, WT, where are you when needed? WORKING. whats your excuse :p

All the PSU's That I supply come with a minimum of 5 years, which by CGA is the life expediency of a Computer, so 8 years is doing rather well -- IF that's the actual problem.
Windows starts up normally, but then a few quick beeps after a minute or so and then logs out and shuts down.

Power supply failures rarely if ever give beeps, they usually just fail, with either lockups or suddenly shutdown, nothing to graceful like logging out.

Cant even remember bogan's real name, as I sure wouldn't make a invoice/receipt to the name on PF1, so cant look up which model it was, and do you how many computers I have built "around 8 years ago" ;)

1424815 2016-08-24 04:50:00 Random lunch time pub talk... ok extended lunch. May be the usb keyboard causing it. Yes. It shuts down nicely. Just without me agreeing to it the_bogan (9949)
1424816 2016-08-24 21:50:00 Of all the things, yes. Swapped the keyboard and all fine. the_bogan (9949)
