1422214 2016-06-22 04:18:00 Hi All

If an ISP states that your email address is free for life, does that mean only that it is yours & nobody else can have it? So if the account with the ISP is cancelled, your address stays as yours. But..should you want to use the address to actually email someone & you do so, then wont the ISP ask for money, so to speak? Thanks. PJ

1422215 2016-06-22 04:46:00 If it's an Orcon one then yes it's free for life after you leave them. I still have my old one and I left them about 5 years ago. Though you may be better going with a free one with the likes of Gmail or Outlook.. paulw (1826)
1422216 2016-06-22 04:57:00 I am confused. If Orcon, who I am talking about, says the name is free for life, are any emails I send & receive are FREE. Is that what you are saying? I don't understand that an ISP would do that for free. How do they restrict you to free emails only? PJ Poppa John (284)
1422217 2016-06-22 06:52:00 Hey PJ,

Ignore your confusion and refer to your first post.

You can set up just to have email services with orcon at no cost. You keep that address for life. I still have mine from 19 years ago. They don't charge for it.

I do suggest reading their terms and conditions, as they probably spy on you which is pretty normal these days but you can protect yourself if you need to.

1422218 2016-06-22 07:08:00 OK I have tried to set up Orcon but it doesn't want to work. I copied the settings from our xtra acct, with the exception of using 25 instead of xtra's 465. PJ Poppa John (284)
1422219 2016-06-22 07:35:00 If you HAD an Orcon account, you could keep the email address. Son has one still.
Of course he isn't using Orcons SMTP server....

However they stopped allowing new accounts, as far as I know you can't sign up to email only with them now.

What server is he using? PJ

1422221 2016-06-22 09:38:00 For smtp, you need to also send your login credentials to verify.

The mail server is
mail.orcon.net.nz

The port determines the service.
The second port is the secure port.

For sending
smtp 25 or 587

For receiving
pop3 110 or 995
or
For receiving and keeping a copy on server until deleted.
imap 143 or 993

Refer to orcons faqs/help.

I use ports 587 and 993, no idea if the unsecure ports work.

Good question.
Just had a look. Xtras....lol.

And port 587.
I guess he picked that as the connection was via Xtra.

1422223 2016-06-22 22:20:00 Really? Orcon been trying to bill me $2 a month now for a few years for mine. It mostly gets spam so was thinking of just not putting any money on that account when it next came time... Have I been paying when it should be free?! :( Chilling_Silence (9)
