651143 2008-03-20 21:10:00 I did a test run last night, to see if it would work.

I slipstreamed IE 7, WMP 11 (and their updates), with XP SP2.

I made an ISO, then burned it, then installed it on the spare hdd here.

I was amazed it worked !

Just have to wait for SP3 to come out now, so I can slipstream that into the CD.

Anyway, some of the files I want to slipstream (if I can) are MSI files.

Nlite doesnt like MSI files.

So, anyone know if its possible?? If it is, how?

Also, has anyone here slipstreamed .Net framework install files before??

I havent tested this yet.

Might be easier to see if it'll work before I add it to Nlite (since if it brings up an error), I have to copy the XP cd to the hdd again!

Then start all over again.

651144 2008-03-20 21:17:00 Being a proprietary M$ format I would guess it's not easy

But perhaps you can make a batch command to install them all the usual way during installation?

651145 2008-03-20 21:22:00 There wont be many MSI files its only the User Profile Hive Cleanup service file at the mo anyway.

I'm just going through add/remove programs to see what else I can add.

Besides IE, WMP and a few drivers

651146 2008-03-20 21:22:00 Often the MSI file extracts the .exe file to the temp folder before the install begins. Before starting the MSI install empty the windows and user temp folder. With the MSI installation still open go to the temp folder and you may find the .exe file that can be copied. The end the MSI install and normally the .exe file is deleted from the temp folder. This doesn't always work but can for some programs.

I had it the other way round where I wanted a MSI file from an .exe. The manufacture said they didn't have a MSI file for the program but when the .exe was run it extracted a MSI file to the temp folder that I used.

This doesn't answer your question but can sometimes be a work around.

I only have User Profile Hive Cleanup service being deployed by group policy so never tried looking for a .exe in the temp folder.

651148 2008-03-20 21:25:00 Some MSIs you can unarchive with WinRAR or similar, give that a try. sal (67)
651149 2008-03-20 21:29:00 Ta Berry I'll try that. Yup MSI isnt one that can be extracted Sal.

I've got Winzip and Powerarchiver installed.

Neither give you the option to extract MSI files :badpc:

If you highlight it.

Since UPHC is already installed it only gives you an option to repair or remove it

651150 2008-03-20 21:33:00 Also, doesn't the .NET framework come with SP2 or at least SP3?

As an aside since you're doing a bit of nLite testing ATM you might be interested in some nLite addons (www.winaddons.com). Sure the purpose is to keep an install slim but there's usually some apps that alot of people install on first boot of a fresh install.

651151 2008-03-20 21:39:00 Should have looked before I asked

Found it..

Open a command prompt. cd (you dont have to cd, just as long as you type in the right path it'll extract)

In my case:

msiexec /a E:\XP\Sept2006\UPHClean-Setup.msi <-- where original file is /qb TARGETDIR=E:\XP\Sept2006\test (<-- folder it extracts to)

Dont know about SP3, havent downloaded any version of it.

It definitely doesn't get installed with SP2.

I was planning on slipstreaming .Net framework 3.5 since (so it says it includes 1 and 2 and updates). Well it better lol. Its 197 mb.
