650813 2008-03-19 07:45:00 Any ideas on where to purchase a new laptop without having to pay for MS Windows in NZ? Has to be a fully featured desktop replacement (i.e. not ASUS eee).

Thanks

650814 2008-03-19 08:15:00 Are you wanting that with or without OS and what OS are you wanting on it, or are you wanting to get a laptop WITH Windows WITHOUT paying for Windows?

The latter is unlikely for a PC

650815 2008-03-19 08:18:00 I am wanting to avoid paying for MS Windows since I want Linux installed (in this case paying for Windows is like a Microsoft tax). I am not wanting to avoid paying for something that I am legally required to pay for. johnd (85)
650816 2008-03-19 08:21:00 You would probably want to contact a custom PC builder or small business PC sales outfit as all the likes of Dick Smith and Noel Leemings are required by MS to sell their PCs and laptops with Vista or XP installed (OEM) - at least that is my understanding. vitalstatistix (9182)
650817 2008-03-19 08:26:00 Dell will sell you laptops with Ubuntu on them - just buy that, wipe it, and put whatever OS you like on it. Alternatively ask them for a rebate for the windows component of the purchase price - dunno about the NZ one, but the Canadian branch of Dell refunds CA $88 for it. Erayd (23)

Dick Smith even has a laptop with linux on it...not exactly mind blowing specs, but its a proper laptop.

650819 2008-03-19 08:35:00 Hmmm your best bet is dell, they have ubuntu preinstalled, although some more research won't hurt... SPARTAN 860 (2618)

I think the spec's are too low - but thanks.

650821 2008-03-19 08:36:00 Lol, the best bet is NEVER dell ziph (13518)
650822 2008-03-19 08:39:00 Dell is reliable, been using them for ages, never had any problems. Only thing better is to build them yourself. And most people don't have the time. SPARTAN 860 (2618)
