650726 2008-03-19 02:05:00 Although it's not been officially announced, Freeview is already broadcasting trial high def programming, with TV1 and TV2 running 720p HD, and TV3 1080i. Scott Bartley tells you how to tap in here (pcworld.co.nz), using a PC to decode the high-def picture rather than a set-top box. Chris Keall (10417)

- First off, you’ll need a PC (no compatible set top box receivers are available yet).....

But I see Hook Technologies are advertising a set top box developed specifically for New Zealand.

Too bad we don't get it our area (Nelson) to try it out..... :(

650728 2008-03-19 05:26:00 Well i'm in Nelson also but Motueka should get signal and some parts of central Nelson might be in luck. I'm gonna be doing some testing here in a few weeks. For reception from Kaukau, Wellington and Wharite, Palmerston North.

No price though.

Just as a matter of interest Chris. How did you get the video out. DVI > HDMI or does the video card have HDMI out??

I wish they'd put a tower on Mt Campbell! Do you know where the Nelson tower will be?

I used a Shuttle SN68PTG6 Deluxe bare bones kit to build my test system ( us.shuttle.com ). This little case has both HDMI output and onboard Nvidia Geforce 7050PV graphics (using a standard VGA port). Since the TV I'm using has both VGA and HDMI I've actually tried both outputs on the Shuttle and found that either will do just as good a job as the other.

650733 2008-03-19 23:47:00 Thanx for the explanation, I found Fossie's blog a bit unclear as far as Dvbviewer was concerned (didnt say one had to pay for it!), and the bit about audio .dll wasnt mentioned, then reckoned you'd need Eyetv to see some feeds; Ta, muchly! feersumendjinn (64)

Yeah, my blog of course refers to getting Freeview HD up and running before the official launch date (since the entire network is live right now) . As of launch day (April 2) there will be set top box solutions beginning to appear . In fact, since the Freeview HD system is a totally open one, any old manufacturer can start selling compatible boxes in the NZ market, they won't need to be certified by Freeview (although that does guarantee compatibility) .
