349973 2005-04-28 10:35:00 I'm considering buying a treo 600 and would be really interested in hearing anyones thoughts, the major drawbacks i have heard of are no bluetooth, poor camera and low screen res., all of which are fixed in the 650 but I have a feeling that will be a bit too pricey for me. I'm not to concerned about the bluetooth thing or the camera, but the screen res worries me a bit if its really bad.
I'm really interested in the e-mail access and acording to telecom you need an xtra account but im pretty sure that any account with pop forwarding will work fine with the e-mail client, please correct me if im wrong, but telecom arnt very helpful on this point.

So treo 600 users and any other interested parties, fire away, yours please

349974 2005-04-28 12:22:00 Winston has one. Have you read his post here (www.pressf1.co.nz). ... Down towards the bottom. I've only heard negative things about those things... techie (7177)
349975 2005-04-28 21:54:00 I have one .

I do not use or need bluetooth, so that is not a drawback .

Regarding the camera, it's as good as any phone based camera (640 x 480) which means it's rubbish, they all are .

If you want a camera, buy a camera and not a phone .

The screen resolution is just fine . Its a small screen, so the resolution is relative .

Mine works well with email (if you can afford the GPRS data costs) . I am with Vodafone, and email with Xtra .

Telecom told me I could not connect when I asked for remote email from my Xtra POP3 mailbox . Said it would only work from the 027 network, not 021 . After 10 minutes of getting nowhere, I requested all names and contact details from the Xtra rep, as I intended raising the issue with the Commerce Commission . Was put on hold for 10 minutes, when they came back they said that they discovered that they were able to enable remote email from 021 after all .

Remote email costs $2 . 50 per month .

The email side works well, and the device works fine as a phone .

The only worthwhile feature that the 650 would give me is a removeable battery, but the discounted cost of the 600 (plus a free Palm M500) was too good to turn down .

349976 2005-04-29 03:08:00 I'm still in two minds about this phone which I've had for about 2 weeks. Haven't used it much yet.

The screen, as GF says is fine. Clear, touchsensitive, no problem.

As a phone it has a slight hollow sound compared to my Kyocera. Not as clear but it does work. My main reservation is range. I lost 3 calls when the Kyocera would have been fine. No aerial to extend on the Treo which is a short-coming. But in fairness the weather was bad at the time and I may simply have been unlucky.

Tried the browser and saw that I could run up a big bill very easily. Works well. Having the Palm OS is useful - enter all your contacts, diary, notes etc on your PC. Probably lots more I don't know about.

So in summary, it is wider than a cellphone, easy to read (out of direct sunlight) and with slightly less than ideal range.

349977 2005-04-29 03:13:00 My coverage is easily as good using GSM. My office is in a low signal spot, and the Treo 600 will hold the call fine, whereas the privious 2 Nokias tended to lose the connection at times unless an external antenna was plugged in.

My GSM Treo does have a "stub type" aerial

I tend to use "speakerphone" mode more on this one, it works very well.
There is a tendancy for your ear to press the hangup on-screen key of you clamp the phone too close, easly fixed (cut the ear off).

349978 2005-05-01 04:25:00 I have had one since they first came out, and agree with all the points made by godfather. Best cellphone I have had. I have used about five previous PalmOS devices, so I was quite familiar with the OS. I dumped a Nokia cellphone and Palm M505 for about $600 and got the Treo 600 for $700 on TradeMe (instead of the $1200 or so being asked for by Vodafone). Now I only have to lug one device around with me instead of two. I tried a Symbian OS device once and hated it, and went back to PalmOS.

Yes, the camera is crap, but who uses phone cameras anyway except for changing room voyeurism and I am not into that. The screen is fine. Bluetooth? I have no use for it. Wifi would be good though.

I won't trade up to the Treo650 - I will wait for the next model - maybe it will include Wifi.

You may like to go to www.infosyncworld.com for a review. Larry Garfield is a very good reviewer.

I replaced the email programme that comes with the Treo with SnapperMail - which is an excellent email programme invented right here in Godzone. I use Vodafone and Paradise - never have any problems. BUT DON'T USE THE BROWSER unless you want a horrid surprise at the end of the month.

349979 2005-05-01 10:43:00 Maybe I got a dud. No wonder Telecom were handing it over for free. :D

Yesterday I had another call dropped for no obvious reason. I've probably only made 25 calls max since I've had it and 5 of those have been dropped. That hasn't happened for years.

It appears to be set on digital roam which I assume is correct. There doesn't seem to be any analogue option but should that matter in a normal coverage area?

I also assume I rely on CDMA signal because I'm 027 on Telecom. Is that significant?

Off to do battle with Telecom tomorrow.

349980 2005-05-01 16:55:00 Don't you find the treo and the harrier phones are a bit ugly?It really puts me off of buying one.I dunno about you but if you find a phone quite ugly but with the features that you want.Would you buy it or choose another mobile? Ninjabear (2948)

Free?
Someone always pays, bet it was a 3 year contract....

What is the signal level? If low, then dropped calls are common.
You will be on CDMA, analogue is phasing out.

349982 2005-05-03 11:05:00 thanks for your thoughts very helpful. I'm looking at getting a telecom one. Does anyone on telecom use it to access their pop e-mail account, because telecom seems to tell me a need an xtra account but i dont see why you can enter any pop address when setting it up?
Has anyone dowloaded the piece of software to crank the camera quality from 65% defult setting up higher because apparently it makes a bit of a difference, I'd provide a link except i cant remember where i read it.
Bit worried about that call dropping statistic on your telecom one, give us an update if you get it sorted
