349537 2005-04-27 23:59:00 I was quite shocked when a few days ago I opened up my new computer's case for the first time to find that its graphics card, a Nvidia Geforce2 with 64MB of DDR VRAM had no cooling whatsoever. There wasn't even any kind of small heatsink. The card has been performing well over my expectations for as long as I've had this PC and I'm not a hardcore gamer which is why I don't think of it as being outdated or anything but even my old computer which had only a SiS AGP card with 4MB of VRAM had a small heatsink on top of it. Could this be a hardware modification of are some versions of the card like this? technicianxp (6463)

349539 2005-04-28 00:25:00 a geforce2 is not a powerful card, so it will stay cool, hell my 9600SE which is gutless as anything too, doesnt have a fan, all it has is a small heatsink which probably does nothing to keep it cool. Prescott (11)
349540 2005-04-28 00:27:00 You bought a new computer with a Gforce 2 in it?

How the hell did that happen?

Anyhow, did you look on the underside of the card?

349541 2005-04-28 02:25:00 I would expect even a Geforce 2 to at least have a heatsink on the GPU. But... they aren't exactly powerful, so they don't get that hot. Aurealis_ (7897)
349542 2005-04-28 04:52:00 most gf2's had some kind of heatsink. dispite a few posters who think slower cards don't need cooling the top gf2 models had decent sized heat sinks and fans otherwise they cooked and deid !

are you sure is a gf2? some pc's still come out with TNT2m64 vid cards which often have no heatsink.

349543 2005-04-28 05:03:00 Do the chips get hot? Touch them. If they are not hot, what is the problem? Graham L (2)
349544 2005-04-28 06:39:00 It should have had a heatsink at least. Probably fell off. pctek (84)
349545 2005-04-28 06:39:00 I assume it's an MX series Geforce2. The MX/MX400 GPUs were made using a 0.18 micron process, with power output being a beasty 4W. They really don't generate a lot of heat, and although most cards produced still had a heatsink of some kind there were a few that had nothing at all. I recall cards made by Creative and Visiontek that fit into the latter group. mird (7969)
349546 2005-04-28 08:43:00 Thanks for all the help everyone. The card details state that it is an MX 100 or a 200 (guess the driver's not too sure either) and it is manufactured by MSI. I have tried some temperature monitoring utilities in the past but they haven't been able to detect the graphics card. My system is manufactured by Compaq and it seems to perform flawlessly so I'm sure the temperatures of the card must be sustainable. I am now going to download a utility which may be able to help me see how hot the card is and I'll let you guys know what it shows. technicianxp (6463)
