349924 2005-04-28 22:43:00 Grabbing onto an 0900 equivalent in Russia would NOT be cheap!

Umm.... I had better make it clear that I will not be letting any dialers actually dial out. I am on ADSL so whether they will still try to dial I don't know but I want to at least infect my computer with some, preferably the worst ones if possible, for educational purposes.

No way will they be getting any opportunity to make me broke! :@@:

349925 2005-04-28 22:44:00 No it doesn't. ZoneAlarm Free.
Maybe its the way you set it up or ZA Pro only - cause it does on mine.

349926 2005-04-29 07:07:00 Had a good look pctek, and couldn't find anywhere to do that.

Good idea suggested to make this into a FAQ. ninja seems well qualified to be in the Hall of FAQ

I think I have one FAQ already.

I dug out modem to try it, I've taken it back off now so scuse me if I don't rmemeber its exact wording. But ZAPro just detected the new connection and asked about it.
Like it does when it first finds the network...

349929 2005-04-29 09:02:00 Like pctek said right at the beginning of this thread this has come up a million times so a FAQ sounds like a good idea to me. And thanks for that info about ZA Pro. When I set up this (2nd hand) comp with my own ISP nothing came up but could be in Network Alert. Will burrow in further.

And good on you ninja in the Hall of FAQ x 2. :2cents:

349930 2005-04-29 09:14:00 It might be a feature of the pro version of ZA. There are quite a few differences between the free and pro versions. FoxyMX (5)

Yeah yeah. I have other things in place other than ZA Pro. (Which is version4 BTW) I have also tested my PC on a number of occasions with leak tests, port scanners, and the like and it passes.
I do spend a fair bit of time doing this for other people too and it amazes me the lack of security most people have.
This is my PC so I am a lot more paranoid.
This topic has been thrashed to death before - we all know the main points:
Use a secure browser - which usually isn't the most popular either - not mentioning any names cause that will start another argument about the various kinds and whats wrong with them all.
Use a properly configured firewall, preferably a pay version
Scan regularly with SEVERAL checkers, not just one or two
Block all holes you can - whether with software or other ways
I must be doing something right as I NEVER get any. And haven't in ages.
I don't use P2P of any kind, I don't use chat of any kind, I don't view porn or anything.
I don't install suspect programs off the net or anywhere else for that matter.
If I do hear of some useful program I go check on the spyware database first to see if its listed.

I test out some of these checkers and blockers as well, as my clean PC isn't much help - I tested a number the other day on a customer with a large infestation and thats the best test of all.
She currently has SpywareBlaster installed as well as a firewall(Not XP) but is still using IE, OE and MSN chat so we'll see how that goes. She is monitoring herself too.
