650604 2008-03-28 17:04:00 My experience with Vista HP - Bought a new pc last winter (Q6600, 8500GT, 2) GB) and found I couldn't get my printer or scanner to work so I created a dual-boot with XP Pro. Every now and then Booted into Vista to do updates, etc and eventually all drivers were available for my hardware but I still continued with XP as my main OS.

A new laptop (Toshiba Portege M600 Core 2 Duo T8300 2.4GHz 3GB) arrived on the scene and this came with Vista Business. So, to start singing from the same songsheet, I have decided to go with Vista HB on my desktop. So far, everything has been running really well with vista - all my old hardware works and what few games I have also work. I do seem to get better download speeds under Vista and setting up a home network was really easy.
I'd have been happy to stick with XP if I hadn't had a new laptop but it maystill be a few weeks before I wipe XP and reclaim some space but it will happen.
Yes, UAC disabled.

650605 2008-03-28 20:48:00 Hi R.M.
I think you were looking at the versions of Vista rather than the small war between Vista and XP?
I have Home Premium. I am about to play around with Virtual PC. Although Virtual PC will download and install on Home Premium, it comes with a warning that although it will run it is not supported and recommends one of the more advanced versions of Vista. Anyway, check out the possibilities of Virtual PC and whether it would be of use to you before settling on which version of Vista. ;)

650606 2008-03-28 21:19:00 Thanks for your comments . I decided to stay with XP for the moment .

I have a couple of post-install questions??

1 . When I tried to run the Windows cd on my DVD reader - it didn't! I ended up using my decrepit and very ancient cd reader/writer to get installation . What would the reason for that?

2 . After the very busy two full days (and yes, I know I'm slow - but hey it was the first time . . . ) I think a disc image of C drive would be a good idea . I get the feeling that people here like Acronis True Image for doing this?

And finally - without all of your support and help - I would never have managed . Many thanks for all of that . It has certainly been a learning curve . :badpc:

:clap

650607 2008-03-28 21:27:00 So, you've got a cd and dvd (not burner) installed?

Are you sure theyve been jumpered properly.

I take it, both have been working fine before?

What happened when you tried to install from the DVD??

Did you select the DVD to boot from??

Then press a key so you could boot from it?

650608 2008-03-28 21:36:00 Yes - previously they both worked just fine .

What do you mean - jumpered properly??

The DVD is new (and is SATA) - the other, well I don't know? It is a drive I very seldom use, but the big son said - why take it out, there is room for it there!

When I/we tried to install from the DVD - nothing! Absolutely nothing happened . I DID try hitting any key . . .

I think your last two comments are the defining ones - should I have changed something in BIOS?? You have to realise you are talking to the very basic here!

650609 2008-03-28 21:39:00 Hmm ok so its SATA, and are both cables connected (data and power).

Inside the case?

If only one is connected, it wont do anything

If both are connected, look in the BIOS under the SATA entries, and see if the DVD shows here.

Does the SATA DVD appear in Windows now tho??

650610 2008-03-28 22:07:00 Every question raises more questions!

Yes - the DVD - both cables are connected (it wouldn't work at all if they weren't?).

The DVD shows under 'My Computer' as DVD-RAM Drive, BUT in Bios as 'IDE Channel 3 Master' ??zTherein is the problem?

Where in Bios should I find SATA entries? Had a look and can't find it...
R.M. (561)
650611 2008-03-28 22:16:00 No that sounds right it should be IDE Channel 3 Master.

It'll be set as Master, as SATA cant be configured as slaves.

It sounds like its working

The entry maybe under IDE in the BIOS

If it didnt work when you installed Windows, its working now isnt it (While youre in Windows)?

650612 2008-03-28 22:36:00 So - I don't need to buy a cheap replacement for my 'very old' (and it just may be an original part of the whole setup) cd player? Just in case I need it for the 'Next' reinstall? R.M. (561)
650613 2008-03-28 22:41:00 Well shouldnt have to. If it gets detected in the BIOS, and it works in Windows.

Only thing I can think of why the SATA didnt work was you didnt select it, to boot from.

Or the other reason maybe you cant boot from SATA dvd's?? I dont know. Never had a SATA dvd burner
