650792 2008-03-20 04:44:00 Okay if XP when it boots as you wrote IS showing as Drive G, even when booted into XP then something certainly not standard. The Screen shot links I posted above sound like the same setup - single drive with two partitions.

When you boot into which ever OS it should automatically change to C: as the main drive. When I installed XP it saw Vista there as already installed and so allocated that as C:\ - I think maybe that's where the problem started, and it was all downhill from there. Yes I think you're right - installing XP first might be the way to fix these issues... a bit of a pain really, but I suppose I'm going to have to do that. Good thing Vista installs quick - wish I could say the same for XP lol

But I'm still sure I installed Vista before XP last time :P I can remember having to mess around with the boot loadery thing to get to Vista again... I think :)

650793 2008-03-20 06:18:00 One thing I have found, and I don't know if its simply luck or not, but if XP is already installed, then Vista is added, I have had no problems, even on customers PC's.

If its the other way around, Vista first, sometimes " weird & Strange" things happen sometimes. (insert spooky music here )

650795 2008-03-20 09:17:00 A thought that may work. There is a boot loader at www.ranish.com that I last used about 8 years ago. If you "chain load" with this boot loader first, you can from memory hide partitions. That might give the drive letters you require? johnd (85)
650796 2008-03-21 01:59:00 I managed to get it going eventually (although it probably would have been easier, if not faster, to just reinstall XP first then Vista :P) by getting one of the partition manager type programs to "Hide" my Vista partition and make my XP partition the boot partition, then when I ran XP setup it said the XP partition was C:\ and the Vista one was J:\... got XP installed, unhid the Vista partition again, reset the Vista boot manager so Vista would boot, and it all works - Vista thinks its C:\ with XP partition as Z:\, and XP thinks its C:\ with Vista partition as Z:\

Thanks for everyones comments and suggestions :)

Cheers,
Mike.

Cheers,
Mike. Glad you managed to fix it  It probably was quicker doing it the way you did as you wouldn't have had to reinstall all your data and programs again.
