348373 2005-04-24 23:48:00 I think he used "stupid" instead of "unknowledgeable" which would be a more appropriate term.

Yes, I think so Greg. Stupid is a bit strong, and was only meant to be in relation to use of computers.

I freely admit to being stupid at times if I do or say something silly, doesn't worry me being called that :)

James has the right idea regarding people reading up and learning how to use etc. Most people will spend $$$$ on a computer, but begrudge spending $100 on a decent book that tells them how to drive it, and what to do if things go wrong.

There has been a lot of warning information given out generally in recent years about viruses etc, and how to protect your computer from nasties, so there is little excuse really.

348374 2005-04-25 00:12:00 o.k so these dialers getting installed on computers, is it a result from running xp in an admin user. Would you have the same issues running a user with less privlages(one that cant install software) or does that not make a difference.
My comment about "buy a Mac" was not aimed in how it probably sounded.
It was more of a response to other comments of "people should know better" and the ones alomg those lines.
My conclusion is that people dont know better about these things and advice is falling on deaf ears. So a mac would be a better choice for a lot of these people.
Spent 4 hours soughting out relatives computers that were full of virues and spyware. Gave them a list of things they needed to do and as soon as i turned my back they back to there old habits again. I

348375 2005-04-25 01:05:00 the problem is "ease of use". you tighten sicurity and you lose some ease of use whic naturally people hate. i like linux root setup, the way you need to use password to do anything critical. however even some linux distro's have users as root with no password which is the dumbest idea ever.

at the end of the day, you can only give someone all the tools needed and instuctions and its up to them to learn.
however the best learning aid ever is $$$. more correctly, the lack of it after paying telecom and techs to repair pc time and time again.

its kinda funny how the "i don't need firewall/antivirus" etc crowd change their tune as soon as it costs them $$$$ to repair the hijack/virus etc.

348376 2005-04-25 01:08:00 Telecom do not give value for money and shouldn't be shirking their responsibility by laying the blame souly on their customers. Just my :2cents:

Telecom's responsibility begins and ends with providing the copper wire and the connection service. Anything else they do is value-added and has a commercial price tag attached.

Next thing you know people will be expecting Power Companies to pay their bills for them if they leave their electrical heating on all night.

Knowledge is out there and free for the learning, we shouldn't expect service providers to pay for users' ignorance, or have their costs lumped onto us through an increase in charges.

Cheers

348377 2005-04-25 02:11:00 Some unfortunate souls are getting big phone bills because of their computers dialing up third world countries without their knowledge. This is caused by a virus that puts a dialer on their system and doing while their computer is unattended. Telecom takes the atttitude that they should have done more to protect their computers and therefore have to pay the bill. A friend recently had a bill of over $700. I think that people in this position should refuse the pay for the international calls and complain to the Commerce Commission against Telecom's bad and greedy business practice. If enough people rebel and complain, maybe Telecom will see sense.

It depends. Telecom probably has to pay an international or globlal company money when such calls are made as well as cover any expenses involved in their international infrastructure. Therefore they cannot afford to refund money which has been someone else.

I don't think it's a positive thing the user has to pay $700... But, Telecom has to pay it's own bills first.

348378 2005-04-25 02:53:00 Telecom have a responsibility to protect and inform their customers. I believe they do very little in this respect.
<snip>
Why don't Telecom be a bit more proactive and take steps to block these numbers for dialup customers by default?
Telecom does have information every now and then on viruses/spyware, etc in the newsletter that comes with the phone bill so they do try and inform their customers. Xtra also has plenty of information on their website.

At the end of the day, however, despite people's best efforts at educating all the users of a computer and installing protection programs it is still easy to get these things due to a moment of carelessness by, especially, younger users. Because of this I think the suggestion for Telecom to block known dialer numbers is a good one, though in practice it may not be so easy. But if it can be done then I believe it should be done.

348380 2005-04-25 03:45:00 just got some info in my telephone bill from telstraclear on thursday about that warning people, so at least they are being pro active.
BUY A MAC you dont get dialers
Will do, right after I trim my toenails with my chainsaw and finishing pulling my nostril hairs out with a pair of molegrips.

348381 2005-04-25 03:47:00 Besides, even if a service pack was released that took away all user rights and made you log in as admin to make configuration changes, the bright sparks would just write a way around it, there are hundreds of millions of Windows machines out there, Those that stand to make money aren't simply going to give up if the task gets a little harder for a couple weeks or so.

oh yeah,if your gullible enough to look to Telecom for guidence on any matter then your doomed for all time.....

from what was said on tv telecom already blocks those and the company in charge of 0900 numbers removes those malicious ones as well.
