650644 2008-03-19 07:33:00 If the same games are going to be played on the new PC then the spec for this should be fine. The issue will be if you buy a newer game as it will not have enough grunt to run it berryb (99)
650645 2008-03-19 08:54:00 errrr, guns I think he means FPS, and Racing... What games... eg BioShock, Halo CE, Crysis etc etc. Old games should be fine on integrated GPU, but for newer games, you need a dedicated video card. Try a Geforce 6600, I have one on my old pc and it can still run some mordern games on low. SPARTAN 860 (2618)
650646 2008-03-19 09:01:00 Wouldn't work - AGP is old tech; it isn't fast enough to run a 'good' video card.

An ATI X1950pro or Nvidia 7900GS is not considered a good video card? While certainly not cutting edge, they are both still fairly decent cards

You'll also find that the cards are crippled by the slow speed of the AGP bus. It doesn't matter how good the card is if the link to the rest of the PC is slow. Erayd (23)
650648 2008-03-19 20:37:00 What does this mean ...1x AGP slot - unused (half height) Winnie (6405)
650649 2008-03-19 20:38:00 Also I was thinking of buying same pc for myself...I use it for a bit of business filing, but mainly surfing net and email. Reckon it would be ok for me too?
Oh and daughter will use it for ipod etc

thanks

650650 2008-03-19 21:53:00 As soon as you start to think about upgrading this PC it starts to become more expensive than it's worth. Maybe a cheap hard drive and some more RAM, but who talked about adding a GFX card to a $300 PC? I mean... really?
If you're not happy with it as is then I'd tend not to get it. Also, I agree with whoever said that not knowing brands is a little dodgy. If you want to buy a games computer for your son then you're looking at shelling out a lot.
For your usage this one's probably fine, if he plays 5year+ old games then it might be ok, otherwise I'd stay clear.

There's more to it than just the specs and it ability to cope with what you are going to do on it.

Brand of parts inside it matter. Not the case or label on the outside.

I had a Compaq in here the other day with a dead harddrive. 2 years old. Lucky lady I thought as it was a Seagate HDD. Wrong.
While Seagates have a 5 yr warranty - becuase she got it as part of her Compaq, Seagate passed the warranty to Compaq and there fore she was out of luck and had to buy a new one. Compaqs only having a 1 yr warranty.

Avoid "brand-name" PCs.
