650616 2008-03-18 21:13:00 I got this sound card, it installs fine, but sound levels are very very low

if I plug a CD drive into the internal CD connector and press play on the drive, volume is normal level

If I connect something to line in, volume is normal level

Both levels adjust normally via software too...

No doubt mic would probably be the same

But if I play anything with software in windows, it's so low you can barely hear it. :illogical

I've got all sliders enabled and everything at 100%.

650617 2008-03-18 22:53:00 Ok, so I loaded ubuntu live and it detects it as a ForteMedia FM801AS and it works perfectly...

Bad drivers for windows I guess?

650618 2008-03-18 23:40:00 Wrong drivers perhaps? Take a look exactly what make and model is written on the card and get the right drivers for it. pctek (84)
650619 2008-03-19 00:01:00 Well that's what I thought, but the card has on it this:

XG logo (www.yamaha.com)

A411-G70 (model number)

FCC ID is LWHA411G7

Main Chip:

XWAVE
QS3000A
9940

Sigmatel Codec:

STAC9700T
LA2L32
9944

rear side of board is "99CG70500170" which is probably just serial number as it's accompanied by barcode as well

I downloaded the correct XP drivers from driverguide.com (labway doesn't exist anymore) - and web.archive.org confirmed this to be the driver released by them

The driver installs, works, but with wave output only at very low volume

650620 2008-03-19 01:46:00 Tried FM801 drivers with no success: "device cannot start" (surprise, surprise) Agent_24 (57)

Says it all really. Can't you get a better card?
pctek (84)
650622 2008-03-19 05:03:00 Well I took the card out to check the numbers again just in case I had misread something - and then I noticed this little jumper block in the middle of the board - to enable or disable the onboard amplifier chip

Well I'm sure you can guess which it was set to...

So now it works fine :o ... BUT how did it work in Ubuntu, Linux is good but being able to change jumpers by itself? I doubt it....

Oh well, it works, probably shouldn't worry about it
