349884 2005-04-28 07:25:00 Hey ya guys just recieved the family's phone bill today and boy was it a suprise :stare: . Normally the bill would just be around $50 but today it shoot up to $200 . Why? Because there was a call made to Solomon Island which lasted 59mins and 57 secs . . . thats an hour international call!!! :help: Rang up telecome and asked if there was any problems with the bill and they said it was most likely a trojon dailer that had caused the problem . They were also willing to take off the cost of that call, just for this time, due to it was our first time and had no problems with our past payments . Personally I would take that this as a warning that I'll need to make sure every one in our family knows what they're doing on the net espeically Dad and what they are downloading . Though my Dad however takes it as Telecome is just trying suck more money out of its customers and is deciding to switch phone companies (or go on prepay phones) and if this happens again he is going to get rid of the net . I know some countries have phone companies that does these sort of things but surely New Zealand Telecom aint one them, right?

Though one thing that is concerning me the most is that I dont think it was a trojon dailer or a virus,I mean I have 3 comps, all 3 comps have AV installed and Firewall plus 2 or 3 spyware removers progs and registery protector and for the past several months I have found nothing, no trojons, no dailers, no extra internet connections or spywares other than cookies . And this happens, so I'm really curious on what may had made that call . Then again it could be just a trojon that my AV and other progs havent picked up but the call only happened once on that bill, so I'm guessing if its a trojon or something surely it would had tried to dail on the net again or something :illogical Have this ever happen to anyone else here? I mean people could stay on the net for hours without realising that their connection was through a fake connection that is going to cost them to fork up huge amount of $$$ at international call rates . I know this would be actually the user's fault for not having proper firewall, AV etc though how many people out there really know that they need a firewall and AV . I've been to heaps of family and friends places to fix their comp and I can safely say none of them know that they need a firewall, AV, bug patches etc, NONE! And money was not a issue, some of the family and friend that I've help werent poor at all who couldnt buy AV or a Firewall, they just didnt know . From my view, this would cause a huge problem if they get a trojon dailer .

So what I want to know is what do you guys think about this, and about Telecom only allowing 1 payment help, not saying its not good cause its basically the client/user of the comp problem not theirs, but what do you guys think?

349887 2005-04-28 07:46:00 Just went on Telecom to have a look at Toll Bar severice that you suggested Prescott, it said that "Permanent Toll Bar is a service that prevents all chargeable calls from being made from your home phone, including chargeable calls through alternative Network Providers." You wouldnt know if this would affect the internet connection would you? So sad its the user's fault...I wonder how bad the net would become in the future.

Yeah already had a look through the program control, nothing seem to be new to odd. Btw what is a pabx system?

Yes it is a dialler. Had a guy with the same one couple of days ago. Not sure which spyware as he had a number of them, including one, that while it was picked up, I had to remove manually. Run Adaware, SPybot and Hijackthis. I can't remember which of the 3 found it....Hijackthis showed me a hiden .dll.
Telecom is being nice in letting you off once. Its your responsibility to keep these things off your PC not theirs.
All of this has been posted here a million times already.

A toll bar won't affect your internet connection.
You don't connect to your ISP with a toll call.

You also need to get the dialer removed from your computer and as some are very difficult to remove I suggest you get some expert help.

349891 2005-04-28 08:04:00 I thought it would be a dailer though my spware prog showed up nothing, HijackThis didnt help much too, everything is updated >_<

Does Telecom have a service that can cap the cost of calls for each month?
