| 348353 | 2005-04-24 11:26:00 | Some unfortunate souls are getting big phone bills because of their computers dialing up third world countries without their knowledge. This is caused by a virus that puts a dialer on their system and doing while their computer is unattended. Telecom takes the atttitude that they should have done more to protect their computers and therefore have to pay the bill. A friend recently had a bill of over $700. I think that people in this position should refuse the pay for the international calls and complain to the Commerce Commission against Telecom's bad and greedy business practice. If enough people rebel and complain, maybe Telecom will see sense. | Oscarr (7960) | ||
| 348354 | 2005-04-24 11:38:00 | I think first and foremost, computer users should be educated on what's out there in virtual world. Just like driving, you have to get some training first before setting your hands on the steering wheel. The public should be educated (maybe by Telecom?) on how to protect themselve from Internet parasites and things like that. I am getting tired of repeating myself.... | Renmoo (66) | ||

And there is no way Telecom can fix it for the users. Therefore, Telecom should not have to foot the bill - overseas Telecoms actually charge Telecom NZ to connect the call, and Telecom NZ in turn must charge the owner of the line. Telecom may be w***ers, but in this case, users have been warned time and time and time again. |

| 348357 | 2005-04-24 11:54:00 | You will find little sympathy for your view on this forum. They are not unfortunate souls, it could be said they are stupid, there has been enough publicity about such things happening. Why should Telecom pay for other peoples lack of foresight? It would mean the rest of us having to pay higher phone bills as a result. |

They are not unfortunate souls, it could be said they are stupid, there has been enough publicity about such things happening. Why should Telecom pay for other peoples lack of foresight? It would mean the rest of us having to pay higher phone bills as a result. Little sympathy on this forum perhaps because the majority of users here aren't beginners? If you're a beginner pc user, or new to the internet (which alot of people are), it's hardly fair to be labelled as stupid as a result of being a victim of something like this. Telecom have a responsibility to protect and inform their customers. I believe they do very little in this respect. Xtra make a big fuss about their email having virus filters...well my partner's mother had her whole system screwed up by an email that slipped through Xtra's blocking. The problem is they lead users into a false sense of security...and they charge a fortune. Telecom do not give value for money and shouldn't be shirking their responsibility by laying the blame souly on their customers. Telecom can afford to absorb the money lost. These people can't. And it shouldn't be an excuse for bills to increase because we are paying far too much for line rental as it is. Why don't Telecom be a bit more proactive and take steps to block these numbers for dialup customers by default? Just my :2cents: |

| 348360 | 2005-04-24 13:36:00 | Why don't Telecom be a bit more proactive and take steps to block these numbers for dialup customers by default? Just my :2cents: Exactly. While the ultimate resposibility should be with the user, I imagine that most people caught by diallers don't get huge bills and don't complain, so, maybe the answer to your query is it's too lucrative for Telecom to disable by default. Too easy too :xmouth: |
