651963 2008-03-23 07:50:00 Hey guys and gals, I was reading thru This thread (pressf1.co.nz) (Hope that link worked!!) and took jwil1's advice and downloaded "Windows Update Downloader." Now I installed it, ran it and downloaded what i thought i needed to, but when it was all done i took a closer look at the service pack i downloaded and i think its the service pack for "Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2."
How do i know if i got the right service pack? I don't want to format and realise i downloaded the wrong service pack.
And another question if anyone knows... After downloading all the files with "Windows Update Downloader," how do i get them onto a disc and make that disc install them when i need them (without having to install all the updates one by one from the cd?)
Hope this makes sense to someone!!!
Cheers.

651964 2008-03-23 07:54:00 I take it you're running XP.

Try launching the .exe file you downloaded. If it's the Win 2003 SP it should say the OS is incompatible. And vice-versus.

If it's XP SP2 (released Aug 2004 I think) you may get the "Welcome to Windows * Service Pack 2 Setup Wizard". This will tell you which OS the SP is for.

To get them all onto one CD, it's best to put the files into a batch file, using the /quiet /norestart switches to automate the install.

So The syntax for installing a single update would be:

cls
echo NOW INSTALLING UPDATES...
start /wait "C:\WinUpdates\WindowsXP-KB??????-x86-ENU.exe" /quiet /norestart

Repeat this for each of the updates, replacing the filename for each update.

651965 2008-03-23 08:03:00 Woah dude, that's waaaay over my head!!! That kinda scares me off trying to do it because i really don't know what a batch file or a syntax is and/or how to use them!! :D

Also I tried what you said to do and launched the .exe file from the cd image that was downloaded by WUD, and an error came up saying "amd64\update\update.exe is not a valid Win32 application. I'm guessing i have the wrong one lol, can you suggest somewhere I can download the right one?

651966 2008-03-23 08:09:00 Well you wouldnt get SP2 for Server 2003, if you use XP 32 bit.

Theyre not the same version. The update wont install

You would select the 32 bit version of XP.

You can use something like Nlite (www.nliteos.com) for most of the updates.

This program can be tricky ! But you can also add drivers, (which will save you, installing them after you've installed Windows) and remove components you dont want

And something like this to slipstream WMP 11 (web.clicknet.ro)

Thats if you want to use WMP 11.

The updates on this site, are what you need for WMP 11, to keep it up to date (what you need to slipstream).

Actually, I just slipstreamed SP2, WMP 11, IE 7 and their updates yesterday, and made the ISO with Nlite and then burned it with Nero.

Then installed it on the other hdd here. It was fine

I'm just waiting for SP3 to come out, then I'll add that to Nlite and make an ISO for it.

All I have to figure out now, is how to add DX 9, the IE 7 Windows Management Add-on, flash 9, to it. I think some of these have to be extracted and added to the unattended file in the copy of the cd you copy to the hdd. Then make a few folders in the copy, then add these files to it.

Or something

What is the O/S?

Do you want to slipstream service packs and make it bootable?

jwil1 makes an assumption that you are using XP. If so which version are you using?

I can not see from here.

651968 2008-03-23 08:13:00 Woah dude, that's waaaay over my head!!! That kinda scares me off trying to do it because i really don't know what a syntax is and/or how to use one!! :D

Sorry - I'll explain it simpler.

Every program has 'options' on it (often called switches or syntax) that you can use to install the software in a different way. In the post above, /quiet installs the update without anything displaying on the screen - so it installs automatically. /norestart means it won't restart the PC when it's complete. If you just used /quiet your PC would restart after each update had been installed.

And because each update is installed automatically AND they require no user input, you can set the batch file going and come back in 10 mins after they've been installed.

To create a batch file, open Notepad (Start>Run>Notepad>Enter)

Type the following at the top (ignore text in brackets):

@echo off
echo Get Ready to install updates... (this displays that text on the screen)
pause (this displays a "Press any key to continue" message, awaiting user input.

Type the following for each update you want to install (ignore text in brackets).

cls
echo Now installing. (this displays that message on the screen)
start /wait "WindowsXP-KBxxxxxx-x86-ENU.exe" /quiet /norestart (replace xxxxxx with the number in the filename of the update you want to install)

When finished, save the file with a BAT extension (to do this go File>Save As> and type the file name in quotes, with .bat at the end - for example "updates.bat").

Hope you can understand it now! ;)

651969 2008-03-23 08:20:00 jw, any idea, on how to integrate the files I listed??

I dont think they use switches.

Well I couldnt find anything useful in Google.

You only have to install the latest service pack (not all 3). Since the latest includes the previous.

I ahve successfully used a batch file to install some updates from a CD:

echo.

I have used this batch file many times to update XP PCs (esp. those on dial-up!) Waiting for SP3 - will make updating XP much easier!!

651971 2008-03-23 08:33:00 Which files?

These

DX 9, (March 2008 redist)

These arent slipstreamed at the mo but IE 7 and its updates are. I dont think it matters, if these are installed or not. IE 7 still works

These 3 files files are only if you want to to secure docs you make in Word, Excel etc.

This (www.microsoft.com)

This (www.microsoft.com)

This I think I may need (www.microsoft.com)

Altho this isnt installed at the mo, and doesnt appear on the WU site, so I can download / install it.

Flash 9, (latest version)

These arent important tho, It'll probably make it into a DVD if I added these anyway

I can just make another cd with them on it, and make an autorun.inf file for it.

Java

ATI Drivers

.Net Framework 3.5

Altho the ISO I made up is up to date (once you install XP) thats it. Its fully updated. The above files are the only ones not slipstreamed / installed

Have you tried using the /? switch to display the switches available for that executable?
