| 651867 | 2008-03-23 03:38:00 | Ok boys & girls - I'm working myself up psychologically to the above (a new ATA HDD and Windows XP Pro -specifically) . I've never done this before and am a little nervous . What should I read in preparation for this? I'm a bit twitchy about exporting/importing my Outlook bits and pieces . I save this in . pst file format? And then import this again? Any other things I should think about? Remember? All my other data is on another drive (including My Documents) . Your thoughts on this process would be appreciated! :) |

| 651868 | 2008-03-23 03:42:00 | Reinstall Windows on the new hdd, connect the old drive as a slave. Then import whatever, off the old hdd. Hopefully you can reactivate windows WHAT are you saving from Outlook?? |

Eg, from family, club stuff, distribution lists (I've had trouble with this in the past - but I see that you can save it in .txt format to an Excel file). I have other important info there in emails too - passwords for programs I've bought (although I think I have most of these printed out now)... You make it sound SOOO easy! I'm not so sure... When you say 'Reinstall Windows on the new hdd, connect the old drive as a slave' I already have another HDD on the pc (that I want to keep there - that's where most of the data I'm keeping is) just WHERE is the new HDD? I don't think I have enough connections to do this (see, I told you I was new at this!). You say 'Hopefully you can reactivate windows' - that feels a bit fraught! I plan to purchase a copy - not sure exactly where from at the moment. The two options are: 1. From a friend -and I know that sounds dodgey, but it is a copy he is no long using, and I will be paying for this. He says 'he will contact Microsoft and let them know he is selling it to me' 2. Purchasing from Ascent. What pitfalls with those options? I see when I have a look at Microsoft NZ site - their hours of work are 9-5pm on working days only - I presume this is from Tuesday (this week) to Friday? |

Since you say theres another hdd in the case already, you could export whatever from the one youre taking out, and save it to the other hdd. Then format the new hdd, partition it if its big enough. Then copy / import whatever from the connected hdd, back to the new hdd, Bobs your uncle ! Thats what I did here, the main hdd is 120 gb, its partitioned in 2 (40 and 80 gb). The files I've downloaded are on the 80 gb or whatever I want to save. That way, if I format again, it wont affect whats on the 80 gb, since its a different partition. Whats on the 80 gb stays there, till I delete it. |

I don't think there is anything on the HDD with OS that I want to keep (except the Outlook bits & pieces) - I've already moved 'My Documents' onto the 'keeper' HDD some weeks ago . Umm - the new HDD is 500GB (I do photography) so 'larger is better' . I plan to partition this drive (say 100 GB) for the OS, 80 Gb for the husband's iPod back-up, and the rest to put My Documents (30 GB at present) & photos on . |

| 651872 | 2008-03-23 04:36:00 | Hmmm, just copy the Outlook stuff to the keeper hdd then. Then remove it / then install the new hdd, and reinstall Windows, if this is what youre planning on doing. And partition the 500 GB before you reinstall into 2-3+ partitions. This system is pretty recent right?? If its too old, it may not know what a 500 GB hdd is, (or detect all of it), and you wont be able to use all of it. |

| 651874 | 2008-03-23 05:10:00 | I wouldnt have a clue, never done it myself, besides export/import contacts I usually delete or just copy / paste email I want to keep in notepad and save it as a text file. this might help (support.microsoft.com) Or try what some people did here (forums.cnet.com) |
