651700 2008-03-22 22:06:00 I recently bought a cheap ($3) sound card off TradeMe. The card works fine, but the drivers that come with it don't. When I install them, the card isn't found by Windows at all, and I cannot use it. If I tell Windows to look for the drivers (after uninstalling them) it works perfectly, until I reboot. Then the same thing happens.

So the question is, where can I get generic sound card drivers that will work with any card? All I want from it really is the MIDI feature, but I'd prefer having everything working (more memory for graphics then ).

651701 2008-03-23 00:02:00 If you have onboard sound on your motherboard that will need disabled first before you try adding drivers for the new one.

There might be some identification name or number on the card which will allow a search for drivers.

651702 2008-03-23 00:19:00 I'll try disabling the onboard sound and post back. :thanks pcuser42 (130)
651703 2008-03-23 00:46:00 The PCI card now appears in the Device Manager after a reboot, but doesn't work, and now my computer keeps freezing - doesn't respond to the mouse, keyboard or anything. It only responds to a hold of the power button. :crying :badpc: :groan: :help: pcuser42 (130)

Bad idea.

Just download drivers.
Go by the model number on the card.

651705 2008-03-23 04:00:00 Alternatively download and run AIDA32 (www.majorgeeks.com) -then look under Audio devices (IIRC) then it should display the model of the card.

Copy it into google and (hopefully) you'll get some drivers. If you can, avoid driverguide.com - not a quick site to navigate and takes several click to get a driver.

651706 2008-03-23 19:18:00 Too late to avoid driverguide.com.

pctek, it's the drivers that come with the card as well as the ones from driverguide.com causing the problem. :(

Driverguide is OK, but you have to search, theres so many.

Did you check the model number on this sound card, I don't care whats on the CD.......

651708 2008-03-23 19:58:00 AIDA32 says the model number is FM801, confirming what I had thought. pcuser42 (130)
651709 2008-03-23 20:35:00 So I got the drivers and the card going, but I'm not going to risk a reboot at the moment, in case I lose sound again. :p
There's no drivers on Windows Update, so I'll have to live with the ones I've got.
