651604 2008-03-22 10:07:00 My desktop has a Nvidia Geforce 8400 GS video card but I want to upgrade it to improve my gaming experience.

The desktop has PCI slots, 2 gig memory, 500 gig HDD and the operating system is Vista Ultimate SP1 32 bit.

I have looked around, but to be honest, I don't understand all of the descriptions stated by advertisers. For instance, is a PCI Express card backward compatible to a PCI mounting slot ?

Would appreciate it if someone could steer me in the right direction. Looking to spend around 250 odd.

651605 2008-03-22 10:20:00 Dont buy an ATI 2600 Pro, I did and replaced it with nVidia 8800GT today.

try to stretch to the 8800GT as it gets all the ticks from the pundits at the moment... bound to change next week...

651606 2008-03-22 11:09:00 If you want to be a total hard out, you can try the 9800 GX2, otherwise go for the NEW 8800GTS, that is the one just released, NOT the one release last year. SPARTAN 860 (2618)

What slot is this card in now?
PCI is used for modems, sound cards etc.

PCI-Express is different and used for graphics cards only.

Take the side of and take a look inside it.

651609 2008-03-22 21:13:00 The 8400GS is obviously in a PCI Express slot as they don't make any other versions of that card. There are no PCI graphics cards so that won't be a problem.Just take out the 8400GS and put in the new card into the same slot hazza87 (12499)
651610 2008-03-22 22:11:00 Thanks for replies, but will a PCI express fit into my PCI only motherboard? You currently have a PCI Express GFX card... You will remove this and put your new PCI Express GFX card where you took the current one from... How will it not fit?

Where do you get that from? It is total rubbish! Do you realise you can get PCI Express sound cards, RAID Adapters etc?

What do you mean there are no PCI GFX cards? there are, I am looking at one right now...

There ARE PCI Graphic cards around, I purchased one recently for an old PC. I currently have it in this PC on a Gigabyte GA-EX38T-DQ6 board. I new PCI Express GV-NX86T512H card crapped out day two of it's life so goes back to the store on Tuesday, meanwhile the PCI one is working fine.

Pre-AGP they are PCI Graphic Cards, Pre PCI they were ISA Graphic Cards.
