| 351230 | 2005-05-02 12:28:00 | I don't agree on the end of the game industry, but I do agree about game ideas, although there are a lot of ideas, the problem is these companies don't want to spend the time and resources on doing it, because they want to release quickly. How I've understood the gaming process, games are built as stepping ladders, not changing too drastically, but always improving on what they had before. I know the game industry could work on getting further, but it's the time and money, if your not releasing anything, you're not making money to help continue your work. That's why you won't see them working on games that would take over 6 years to make but in the shorter time they're working on the next step. I believe the other factor is competition. Kame. |

The other thing is that all of us older gamers have seen it all before, when I chuck a kid infront of a computer game they get blown away,More so then the way I did 20 years ago with an Atari 2600 . . . . . . That aside, all industries/fads peak at some point, the large sales of the PS2 and Xbox (in NZ anyway, I did read that NZ had the highest Xbox sales per population anywhere in the world, We can probally thank The Warehouse for that) are driven by parents/families, And most of them have already gone through the ps to ps2 route, The industry may get another upgrade out of them but Im sure it will be harder then the last cycle . My prediction, Even if the next generation of consoles is a boom time then the one after it will be a bust, Not that I care, I would like to see the big companies producing vanilla games and console ports put back on a more even standing with the smaller devs so we can get better games coming through . The fact that Sony could purchase the F1 lisence for 10 years also stinks to high heaven . Though this has given rise to the likes of LFS and Rfactor, 2 of the potentiolly best racing sims I have ever seen (anyone who mentions GT4 in the same breath a sim needs to be shot) . Probally miles away in my thinking, but no worse then whomever wrote that article, The fact is that while their are game capable machines in peoples homes (pc or console) someone will be making games for them . Remember the skateboard? . . . . What kid didn't have one of those? What I don't get is the large numbers of youngsters sitting at home on a console, hell when I was that age no one could have made me hang out at home by the TV, I was out raising hell . . . . . . |

| 351234 | 2005-05-03 02:21:00 | I disagree that the end is nigh and the only thing I take from the article is that Dvorak has money worries (or he hasn't played some of the modern games). Where is the 'RTS' category? I would hardly classify RTS games as simulators. He obviously never got into Age of Empires and the 1m upgrade options, (BTW the expansion pack for Rise of Nations is well worth it! Gotta love the cruise missiles and nukes....) because if he did he would still be playing and not writing weak articles. The thing with FPS games is the maps, AI & special features - yeah the weapons, bots & moves etc are pretty much the same as some of the original FPS games from eons ago (think Doom there, you could play the original through the phone line with a friend), but the AI has improved dramatically (see Ghost Recon for that) and the maps are visually stunning (Far Cry) as well as challenging (i.e. Joint Ops). If you combine multiplayer games with smart AI, challenging maps and then throw in some pretty good vehicles (try the helicopters in a Joint Ops river mission for a Vietnam Valkyran moment, plus the motorbikes are pretty cool), all wrapped up in a realistic environment / setting / mission then you have a really engaging experience. Is it 3am already? As far as the death of the indusutry goes? When guys our age are still playing PC games until all hours of the morning then the industry has nothing to worry about. Who cares about the engine / platform, just bring me more maps for FPS games and upgrade options for RTS games! I agree with Metla that people & parents will only accept so many upgrade cycles (on console games) before enough is enough but as far as small incremental steps to improve on existing technology for PC games go, that's enough for me so bring it on! *A93 disappears to fire up some sniping candy with UT, facing worlds* |

And a nice RPG whiles away an afternoon or 2. |
