351068 2005-05-02 01:40:00 When buying any form of optical hardware that relies on mass produced media for performance and reliability, it is important to make sure the manufacturer is going to support the different versions of media that becomes available.

This is easiest done by checking the manufacturers website before purchasing the hardware concerned.

If you cannot find the website or cannot find many firmware updates, then my advice would be to steer well clear.

For this reason Liteon Optical drives are my Drive of choice on all systems I build (they regularly support prereleased drives via firmware updates, therefore I will support them)

For the same reason I would not recommend Cyberdrive, their support of their own product is terrible and their website is down as much as it is up.

This does not mean the drives themselves are particularly bad, it just means that if you get one that does have issues with some of the more common media available here, you may wait a long time before any support for that media becomes available if at all.

I suppose if you are going to purchase a Cyberdive, DSE is the place to buy it
from, as you know they will take it back if it does have issues (normally on your word) compare that service with some of our better known Online sellers who insist on workshop testing before admitting a fault.
They then often use a different form of media that works fine so frustratingly your left with a drive that will work sometimes on some media.

351069 2005-05-02 01:56:00 Hi!

What I don't get, is why people still buy from Dick Smith? Granted, some things you can only buy there, but computer accessories like keyboards, adsl modems, CD-Rs..... WHY?

The price is at least 150% compared to other stores, and almost twice as much compared to small computer shops....

That may heve been true of the past but currently some of their pricing is not too bad.

I went looking for a 80Gig hard disk at the weekend. There was a $2 difference between DSE and the local asian vendor for the same disk. The other advantage is that support is not too bad and taking an item back whether it is wrong type or faulty is easy compared to alot of asian shops who don't want to know you if your not buying.

351070 2005-05-02 02:56:00 I once bought a 52X CyberDrive from DSE it lasted 6 months. It started giving read errors and after a week of doing this it wouldn't read at all. Replaced it with a Asus DVD-E616P1 rom drive still going strong after 18 months.

351071 2005-05-02 03:13:00 "What are their weaknesses?"

You'd have to research the particular model.Try the reviews on CDRLabs and CD Freaks. New models of supposedly good brands can be duds. For example a recent Lite-on was described as “Acceptable DVD-Writer at 8x Writing speed, but 16x writing still needs improving. And very poor CD-Writing quality doesn’t make this drive your first choice.”
No - you tell me. You said they have weaknesses. I have read reviews, I installed tons of them, I have owned them too.

351072 2005-05-02 03:55:00 Installed tons of what? No brand is always the best. My point is that just because Liteon or whatever was good doesn't mean the current model is as good compared to other brands as previous models. I've given you one example, the Liteon SOHW-1673S supposedly has worse CD writing than previous Liteons. That may not matter to you if you have another drive for CD writing. PaulD (232)
351073 2005-05-02 04:04:00 I have that Lite-on drive, It does steller work in all areas. Metla (12)
351074 2005-05-02 08:22:00 They have absolutely amazing service.

I accidentally destroyed two $13 mosfets simultaneously the other day, and they were happy to replace them (refund actually, in fact!).

Even if I lose the receipt they still honour warranties, giving you the benefit of the doubt every time.

They go out of their way to help you.

Sure, their prices for cheap things are horrible, but that's pretty typical of most big retail stores. More expensive stuff is better priced. I only buy the former anyway, but still....

I use them often for electonic components as they are the most convenient place to go I know of. I would use Jaycar more, but none of the above applies as much to them, and their website is horrible.

DSE's website is really, really good.

Enough said :)

351075 2005-05-02 10:58:00 Haha, now that you guys have "quoted" me so many times, I figure I should reply....

#1. Store locations: For those of you who said that DSE is the only shop for you, I did mention at the start of this thread, that I was thinking more of people in Auckland, or the other cities, where you get more choice... It's a bummer, if you live somewhere with only DSE,I guess...

#2. Service: yeah, I admit that their service is quite good....

#3. Range of products: I do go to DSE to buy somethings, but only those that I can't find elsewhere, like special A/V connectors, etc.... But other stuff, nah......

DSE sounds quite good? Ahh, but then we get on to Price!

#4. Now, I chose 3 products to compare....

a. DSL router (Auckland itsy bitsy computer shops ~ $60. DSE cheapest = $117. (Model has been out for 3 years I think)

b. Kodak Camera CX7300(Shop I went by in newmarket = $150 DSE = $178. (Ahh, and it's already the cheapest one there, what's more it's on sale, from $228 original)

c. And finally, the humble phone line filter for DSL connections. $18 in DSE. For a generic one with no brand. At my local computer shop? $12 for a dynalink....

Don't you just feel ripped off?????????????

No more ripped off than buying a bottle of milk or can of coke at a dairy or petrol station when you cant be bothered looking or everyone else is shut .
You choose what you buy at DS . I choose wisely . If mortals want to make it first place of call to purchase an item they could buy cheaper elsewhere tough, then they should have done a bit more research .
