651301 2008-03-22 12:49:00 I have:
NOD32
Counterspy
Spybot
Spyware Dr
Superantipsyware
Ghost Security Suite (Nothing to do with Ghost by Symantec)
Zone Alarm Pro 4.0

It seems you bank to much of software like this.
Thats simulates much security, but only it helps when the system is infected.
In software firewalls like Zone Alarm i see more danger than advantages.
The intention must be to close the system for malware and not to fight against the infections.
Brain.exe and a router are more important than all this software together.
I am only use AVG 7.5 Free Edition and the XP Firewall, all depends on a router.

Shows what you know. A firewall Prevents certain attacks.

So does Ghost - it does not scan for infected files.

I must be doing something right - I haven't had malware in years.

651303 2008-03-22 20:20:00 Will also read your thread pressf1.pcworld.co.nz do you have any other suggested settings for ESS?

So at this stage it looks like I will run

Eset Smart Security
Browse with firefox
Spyware Doctor combined with another one or two when I make up my mind

Seem a good combination? Should I keep running windows defender or turn it off completely? And turn off the windows firewall just leaving eset on?

I am pretty sure the firewall in ESS will be sufficient for me aslong as I can configure it to work well with DC++ (havent had time to try yet will post new topic if I have troubles) Let me know if I am on the right track otherwise thanks for the help guys. Those settings were for te 2.7 version of Nod32. The new 3.**** has a different interface - Nod32 Antivirus Suggested Settings (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) Post 12 and the Smart Security Settings (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) post 12. These are what I set my own and customers PC's to.

Note: Not to sure how long the links in the threads to pictures uploaded to imageF1 last. Maybe someone or a Mod can advice.

651305 2008-03-23 00:49:00 Maybe before rubbishing the software you should "Learn How to Use It" - you can allow what ever port or port range you want through the firewall.

Its easy - simply open the firewall, click on "Configure Rules and Zones" , under Zones select new / local / port - and either select a single port number or a range of ports that you want to allow access, it also has the option to allow what ever program you want through any port. Open Port Settings (www.imagef1.net.nz)

So to answer your complaints - it does do what you ask.

I tried configuring the ports was zone alarm so i completely gave up.

ESET Smart security.Although I allow an application to access the net and I even try disabling the firewall it still wouldnt let the program use the ports. No idea why

651309 2008-03-23 04:29:00 Sorry, I should have said settings for Nod32 Virus program. I haven't bothered with the Smart Security. First link in the posts above, only difference is the Nod32 wont have the firewall, it will have Antivirus and Antispyware. (The one that says " Nod32 antivirus Suggested Settings) Or here same location Link (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz)

The Antivirus in The Smart security has the same settings as the stand alone antivirus.

Could you please elaborate on the dangers of ZA especially as you are quite happy using XP's crappy firewall.
