No! And you can't have your vote back...

Actually, the question was purely hypothetical. I just wanted to compare the views of people here with people I know. I am not currently applying for a new job, but am considering it and something else similar. For those who wouldn't hire me, you all sound like my mother (does mother know best? Nope, she lives in the distant past).

For those who would hire me on the basis that I could do the job, thanks for the vote of confidence. You are just the type of open-minded and progressive people I like!

350348 2005-05-03 07:03:00 IT'D depend on their skills and general demeanour really....let me all remind you of a lovely song I know and love.....

**********************

I was a rebel from the day i left school
Grew my hair long and broke all the rules
I'd sit and listen to my records all day
With big ambitions of where i could play

My parents taught me what life was about
So i grew up the type they warned me about
They said my friends were just an unruly mob
And i should get a haircut and get a real job

Get a haircut and get a real job
Clean your act up and don't be a slob
Get it together like your big brother bob
Why don't you get a haircut and get a real job

I even tried that 9 to 5 scene
I told myself that it was all a bad dream
I found a band and some good songs to play
And now I party all night, I sleep all day

I met this chick she was my No.1 fan
She took me home to meet her mommy and dad
They took one look at me and said ("oh my god")
Get a haircut and get a real job

Get a real job, why don't you get a real job
Get a real job, why don't you get a real job

I hit the big time with my rock 'n' roll band
The future's brighter now than I'd ever planned
I'm ten times richer than my big brother bob
But he, he's got a haircut he's got a real job

Ps: I worked as a full time Roadie for a band for six years, (off and on in between quitting and getting fired now and then).......and I can assure you that if I coulda played an instrument I'd have loved that lifestyle however the Crew does work VERY hard.....and it's really not 'party all nite and sleep all day' for them at all....(14 hour days.....lucky if you get 3 hours sleep per night and that's not always consequitive.........killer job for getting fit carrying speakers the size of refrigerators around lol)

I applied your question to my own business, so no, i wouldn't hire someone who put a worse face on my company then what i do, Its not so much my close mindedness but how the customers would get a first impression. You can't expect others to be non-judgementel when your throwing out comments about being close minded based on your little poll.

For whats its worth, Im 18 stone, much of my upper body is adorned with tattoo's, Shaved head, 7 inch scar across my throat, and when I frown people keep their distance.

And I still wanted hire anybody with dreads to work my shop.....

350350 2005-05-03 09:02:00 One of the staff members at one our IT suppliers has dreadlocks - those of you in Auckland who deal with a particular (nameless) supplier will know who I mean. He's one of the nicest (as well as honest and hard working) fellows in the industry and would you believe, he works in sales! We call him 'Sideshow Bob' because of his dreads - which were always tied back and dare I say it, relatively clean. He has since shaved his head but that's beside the point......

And yes I would employ someone with dreads provided, like anyone else, they could do the job and had the right personality - and I'm speaking as an employer.

Well actually, I really meant those people who voted but gave no reason that they wouldn't hire anyone with dreadlocks. At least you gave a fairly valid reason.

Where's the scar from?

350353 2005-05-04 08:02:00 My dreadlocks were almost long enough to sit on, and i still got work . They've gone these days, and the doors of opportunity seem to be opening for me more often, although that could be simply a better attitude on my part, and the fact i'm better equipped . Perhaps its got nothing at all to do with matted hair (which for the record WAS clean!) but because as one promoter said to another about me, "He's done the hard yards"

What do i do? i own and run bloody great sound systems for concerts . I guess that means i'm alowed long hair, but it does help if i am tidy when dealing with new or touring people . :stare:

As for the crews i choose, they tend to be predominantly female, i i don't give a flying perverbial how long short or messy their hair is, just how well they can roll speakers into place, or make the lights look excellent . Ultimatly that is all that the bands or promoters that i am working for care about too .

We are lucky because it is word of mouth that gets us work, not the first appearences as me and/or my business partner walk into a potentual employers office . If it were, i'd probably send her in rather than me!
