I am.
Very good for browsing, but terrible for P2P, which they throttle to near-death.

Someone on a gaming forum questioned them about this a few weeks ago & got the reply: "We are currently in the process of developing a more effective method to communicate our bandwidth management policies with our customers. This will cover all areas including P2P, gaming, FTP and HTTP - this will be available from the Slingshot web site. We are focused on ensuring that our customers maximise the JetBuster internet service regardless of their online activities as long as they do not breach Slingshot's terms and conditions."

Don't know if he pursued it further.

351716 2005-05-05 06:03:00 Peterj116, do you mean that they throttle P2P after the cap has been reached and exceeded, or do you mean before that?

Cause surely, I thought that would be wrong... Unless they actually know I'm downloading illegally (and that's the Police's responsibility and not theirs), P2P can be legal.....

Personally, I just switched over to Iconz.. Why? Cause there were one of the 3 companies in NZ that doesn't charge a switching fee for DSL at this point of time.... (Orcon used to have it free, but not anymore)... Only Ihug, Iconz, and some small internet company...

351717 2005-05-05 08:13:00 I'm on an unlimited plan with Slingshot, so there's no cap issue.
As far as I know, they identify P2P by the port number (I think) so that sort of traffic receives low priority during "peak hours" which seem to end around 2am.

It's more about sharing the bandwidth among all customers, rather than any legal policing. I only use it for chat purposes. I use a hub via DC++ & although other hub users can download all they like, it's not worth trying here, so it's just a chat tool for me.

351718 2005-05-05 23:55:00 Peterj116 you say `other hub users can download all they like,it`s not worth trying here`. Why not? What do you mean,if I wanted to download stuff from a P2P they would stop me?
You`re on unlimited so you would be getting 50x dialup speed, so what is your line speed?

351719 2005-05-06 04:16:00 Interesting discussion about it here (forum.emule-project.net) Peterj116 (6762)
351720 2005-05-06 04:38:00 Peterj116 Thanks that was a bit of an eye opener.Think I`ll stick to the devil I know. Hilton (293)
351721 2005-05-06 05:35:00 I've just asked Orcon what their policy is regarding allocating bandwidth. Think I read somewhere that they only limit "the top 10%" of P2P users.
That sure ain't me.

351722 2005-05-06 05:55:00 So, Peterj, are you on slingshot, or are you on orcon? On the previous post you said you were on slingshot unlimited, and then the next you say you asked "orcon"...

Anyway, I don't think there are unlimited 1mbps / 2mbps plans available, right? Unlimited plans currently only go for 256kbps, according to my little "research"...

Yeah, I do know that Orcon "allocates" about 40% of their server capacity to the top 10% users. That's fair... If they don't do that, probably the top 10% users will use up to 70-80% of the resources...

And with that, they can offer real unlimited plans as well... Unlike Telecom, where 10gb plans are the maximum.. Quite skank, really..
