351484 2006-03-24 04:24:00 Why not research the idea first?

http://www.petsonthenet.co.nz/

I was building a classified system for pets on the net as a charity project, They said they wanted to charge for it though and I told them if it was voluntary or a charitable cause they wouldn't be able to make money from it. I insited I would only do it if it was not for profit, they told me they no longer needed my services.

They put on their website they needed $5000 worth of donations to pay for a classified system, which I was going to do for free if it was not for profit.

351486 2008-05-26 06:21:00 I wish to refute/correct the misleading statements made about petsonthenet . co . nz in this post . Whilst I am reluctant to bring this back out again in public, I have just found this post about petsonthenet in google and feel I cannot let it go unexplained/unchallenged… I am Kim Buchanan the Director and Volunteer Administrator of petsonthenet . co . nz, NZ's nationwide database for lost and found pets .

I refer to Creighton Browns statement below . . .

" I was building a classified system for pets on the net as a charity project, They said they wanted to charge for it though and I told them if it was voluntary or a charitable cause they wouldn't be able to make money from it . Firstly it is true we chose not to work with CB for several reasons, many of which I am not prepared to illuminate upon here so as not to hurt anyones feelings . However I will say that all organisations, even a free community service such as ourselves, have the right to accept or decline volunteers, if their 'philosophy" is not wholly aligned with their own… .

A major point of issue/philosophy clash we had with CB was totally irresolvable and meant we simply could not work with him . The system CB wished to build for us, we soon discovered was not to be for petsonthenet at all, he wanted it to be his and able to be used by any website anywhere in NZ or the world . The effect of this would be essentially totally cannibalising and negating the need for our website, petsonthenet . co . nz! I tried without success on several occasions to get him to understand our philosophy, that there needs to be ONE nationwide database for lost and found pets, not dozens of little ones on every pet website! Otherwise people would be back to the bad old pre petsonthenet . co . nz days of having to look in multiple haystacks for their missing pets . Multiple databases just totally cannibalises and destroys the power of the internet to find and reunite lost pets . And as we are free, there is even no need for competition “on price”…

The system was also to be done to his generic terms/requirements not our specific needs for petsonthenet . . . This is an example of a volunteer who wants to do it their way or the highway, unable to meet consensus on this, or our core philosophy of one nationwide database, we instead upgraded to a (paid) “off the hook” package which services us pretty well .

I also wish to correct/explain this…petsonthenet is a FREE service, we do NOT charge for lost and found pets or pets for adoption…We have no intention of ever charging for this . However we do charge for pets for sale ads, in order to support the free service, possibly this is where he has become confused .

It would have been wonderful to have this volunteered to us, but in this case, we could not bring it together harmoniously . This experience has made us realise there is no such thing as a free lunch, even though we’re a free service ourselves . We now realise we have to pay for skills such as CB obviously possesses, if we require such skills again . We now realise that when you pay for a service, you pay for the right to set the parameters of how that service should be fulfilled . You can also investigate and select the company or person who is most capable of the job, most dependable and able to cooperate with you as part of your team for the project .

Why bother - it was ages ago.
Pets on the Net is well known, I have used it myself several times.

Creighton was well known too, and no-one is/was going to waste much time worrying about his posts.
