653012 2008-03-26 20:34:00 Hi,
I have XP Pro sp2, 3.06 Mhz CPU, 1 gb ram, 40 gb h/d etc and have had a perfect "no problem" useage for some time, now, on pressing the "start" button my 'pooter will cycle: ie., get as far as the windows logo then start over- I finally have a screen that says press enter to "start normally" and if i am lucky, I press that and I am back to normal/completion of starting the 'pooter
Am I needing a new off/on button switch or what?
I have searched F1 files and can find no answer
Nothing, has been installed manually - I have "auto update" on all the time which has always worked (whether to reboot or accept the update as installed and completed), and carry on.
All spyware, trojans etc have been checked at least once a week

653013 2008-03-26 20:50:00 Its trying to BSOD but you have it set to automatically restart.

If you can get the Safe Mode menu theres a choice that says Disable that, see if you can get the BSOD error up.

Yeeeesssss......

who wants to bet it's a microsoft update that's stuffed things up ?......

suggest you use system restore if you have it enabled (start button/programs/accessories/system tools/system restore) to set the pc back before the date this happened - this will 'uninstall' any system updates that have occurred between now and that date and any programs you've installed or uninstalled will revert back to what the system was running on that date......i've seen microsoft updates do this to pc's before - not stating definitevly that's what it is but very easy to check by restoring the system.....also FYI system restore is easily reversable...........

653016 2008-03-26 22:19:00 BSOD - blue screen of death when it crashes.

It usually gives u a stop error, with numbers after it. Or the name of a file or driver thats causing it to crash

Click on the pic, on the right here (en.wikipedia.org)

Thats what it looks like

Untick automatically restart and if that screen comes up, tell us what it says.

653017 2008-03-26 22:24:00 BSOD = Blue Screen of Death.

Go into System Properties - hold down the Windows key and press the Pause button or navigate to the shortcut in the Start Menu somewhere.

Under the Advanced tab go to Settings in Startup and Recovery and remove the tick from "Automatically restart".

You should then get an error message next time it happens again. Either do a Google search on the error message or post it here entirely for analysis.

Or you could just do a System Restore.

Edit: Darn you, Speedy. :p

653018 2008-03-27 05:01:00 Hi all ,
Thanks, for that info- I went back in a systems restore - 16 days and so far even after 4 - 5 reboots- I do not have that trouble-I assume even over night it will not change.
I also uninstalled Firefox and re installed it - I regained .5 gb of h/d and am now enjoying a faster load up
Either way Ff appears to be a recource hog no matter how you put it- still a good search program, but ????

653019 2008-03-27 07:43:00 you can find out exactly what is wrong by checking out your Blue Screen of Death logs. Follow the instructions here apcmag.com een_actually_means.htm

You need to download some files, but if it solves the problem, its worth it.

First of all, FF shouldn't be taking 500MB under any circumstances and it is NOT a search program. Its a web browser. What did you un-install exactly?

653021 2008-03-27 19:42:00 Hi all,
this morning on start up I am back to the recycling-yesterday I did several restarts and it worked and for which I gave thanks :banana
Now I am back to square one-I will try and do as suggested above but I am rather suspicious that they will not work either- but who am I to doubt professionals :(
I assume the first question I put about a new off/on switch could be relevant after all?
Anything more, people?
