652743 2008-03-25 20:23:00 Good morning boys & girls

I'm getting myself mentally prepared for the above. Do I leave all the USB devices in place - or do I take them out and reinstall individually? Sorry for such a 'dumb' question, but I need to know the 'detail' before I start this process!

652745 2008-03-25 20:25:00 There is no such thing as a dumb question - only dumb answers.

Unplug everything not necessary - do the install, then install the drivers for the motherboard in this order..

Chipset, graphics, sound, network, then everything else. Make sure you reboot, then plug in your USB devices one by one, and download or load drivers from disks as required. ;)

652746 2008-03-25 20:28:00 I would install them one by one after windows is working and your system (motherboard) drivers are installed etc. because some USB devices request that you install the software without the device plugged in and only plug it in when it tells you to. Some will install the software first and then you plug it in and configure it. Nomad (952)

652748 2008-03-25 20:37:00 Oops - sorry about the double post. Things sort of glitched, I'm afraid...

I suspected I would have to do the reinstall the 'hard' way - one by one. Thanks for the confirmation. :groan:

Windows may install some of the drivers for you.

Have you got a brand name PC (Acer, HP, Compaq) or did you get one 'custom built' (from a smaller PC shop)?

I'm guessing the second one - a disk would have come with the PC when you got it - it will be labeled motherboard drivers or similar. That's the one you will need. If you can't find it - you'll need to go to the motherboard's manufacturers website and download drivers from there.

652751 2008-03-25 21:01:00 For printers, remove the USB cable. Printers can be fussy.

If you leave the cable in, (and the printer is on), while you're installing the software for them. The software / drivers may not work, and you'll have to uninstall / reinstall them

Some printer software may also tell you to do this (to remove the USB cable ), and plug it back in after a reboot.

652752 2008-03-25 21:02:00 Mmm - my pc is one my son put together (so, no, it's not a 'brand' name one) and no, there is no disc with these on either. I had a look at the manufacturer's site - Gigabyte. When I got there - there were two main options for my motherboard GA-K8VT800, Rev 1.x or Rev 2.x. No idea which is mine - if at all! R.M. (561)
