652444 2008-03-24 23:51:00 Hi all

When I built my house I ran ethernet cable from a centrally located router to four different locations in the house so I could just plug in and receive internet.

One of these locations was behind my entertainment centre in my living room.

Now I am going down the path of a HTPC I want to make the most of this and access the net with it.

I also have a Playstation 3 and an Xbox 360 elite in the entertainment centre and want to have all three connected to the net via the one access point in my living room.

My question - I presume I need a network switch and I also presume that an unmanaged one will be fine. Do you think 10/100 would be adequate or would the difference (if any) be noticeable if I were to shell out the extra and get a 10/100/1000 switch?

Thanks in advance.

652445 2008-03-24 23:55:00 Normal switch will work fine.

The system in your house will only be 10/100, so you won't see any difference on that end of things, but if some of the devices that are plugged into the switch have gigabit LAN and you want to communicate between them, or if you want to set up NAS or similar, it would probably be worth it.

I'd be sticking with 10/100 for now, an 8 port switch is worth a whole $25 these days, and you can never have too many lying around. :p Upgrade to a 10/100/1000 later if you need to.

652446 2008-03-24 23:59:00 Does anything else support Gigabit?? besides the switch, if you get one??

If not, there's no point in getting a 10/100/1000 switch. It wont make things any faster

Does the PS3 and Xbox support wireless and ethernet??

If they only have wireless, there's no point in getting the switch.

Use the AP instead

Pretty much what I was thinking.

Speedy - both the Xbox 360 and PS3 have wireless and wired LAN.

Looks like a cheapie 10/100 it is then!

Cheers.

652448 2008-03-26 02:49:00 also an etgernet hub should work perfectly, only around $90 at DSE helpless random (11788)

Don't get a hub, and especially do NOT pay $90 for one. Hubs are useless compared to switches, and only achieve about 1/3 of the rated speed due to data collisions.

He is correct though, hubs broadcast to every used port, switches do not and are therefore much better!

Unless he thought I was replying to utopian. :p

Switch vs Hub - A hub shares the total bandwidth among all users, while a switch provides a dedicated line at full bandwidth between every two devices transmitting to each other.

And these days switches are worth bugger all - and a whole lot less than most hubs.
