652310 2008-03-24 08:44:00 Hey guys and gals,

I just formatted my laptop and went to install Win XP Home edition from CD. All was going well, collecting information worked, dynamic update worked, preparing installation worked, but when it gets to Installing Windows a Fatal Error pops up that says-

"An error has been encountered which prevents Setup from continuing.

One of the components that Windows needs to continue setup could not be installed.

Data error (cyclic redundancy check).

If you are installing from a CD, there might be a problem with the disc; try cleaning the disc or using another disc.

If you are installing from the network, it is possible that not all of the files were copied correctly to your disk drive. Run the disk checking utility on your installation drive from the Recovery Console and start setup again.

Press Okay to view the Setup log file."

Then I press Okay and the log comes up-

Error:
SXS.DLL:Syntax error in manifest or policy file "D:\I386\asms\52\MSFT\WINDOWS\NET\DXMRTP\DXMRTP.MAN" on line 5.

(theres alot more stuff in the log and if you can help and would like to know what else it says, i will type it up lol)

Can anyone help? I have cleaned the CD and there is a little scratch in it!!! I don't have another CD and I don't know of anyone else that has one!!
is there a way I can copy my XP disc with something that will read thru the scratch or something?

652311 2008-03-24 09:22:00 How exactly did you clean the CD ?

A slight scratch doesn't always stop the Install, but a unclean CD can.

You can try using Isopropyl Alcohol to clean it and se if that works, or take the CD to your local video shop, as most of them have resurfacing machines that remove / polish out the scratches, I think from memory I saw it advertised at about $8.00 / CD.

What you can try is on a working PC, open /browse the XP cd and see if you are able to copy the I386 folder to another PC, if you can then its possibly not the CD causing eh problem.

652313 2008-03-24 19:42:00 You can also use something like tooth paste or car polish which have a very mild abrasive substance in them applied to a damp cloth and polished out. Remember don't polish round in circles on the scratch but polish from the inside of the disk to the outside.

652314 2008-03-24 20:51:00 Extremely unlikely its the CD. Its pretty hard to wreck a commercial CD.

Could be your CD/DVD drive, or could be the HDD or RAM.
