353054 2005-05-07 06:13:00 This is an article (www.winsupersite.com) by Paul Thurrot, who has been variously described as an MS brown-nose and a one-eyed Windows user etc. He reviews the Longhorn beta and there is a brief but important comparison with Linux and MacOSX. In the end, he finds the Longhorn beta hugely disappointing, which still cannot stably integrate features that MacOSX was already running one year ago. vinref (6194)

353056 2005-05-07 06:57:00 Longyawn indeed Murray. Is this all leading to better things for users ? Allow me to doubt. We have a number of PF1 folk who stick to older CPUs ( they are fast enough for the tasks), older OS ( they manage to do everything needed), and we recently had a thread about the urge to update.
If you have that urge, then OK. Many don't.
How old is your car ? Does it do the job ?
( But isn't getting the latest whatever fun !!!!)
Cheers Tony

353058 2005-05-07 07:01:00 Further to my one, you could go the Terry P way. He has several PCs, each running a particular Windows incarnation. Easy to go back to say 98 for a speed check .... TonyF (246)

Yeah, I'm happy with win2k, stable and fairly safe when patched, service packed and de-services .

Linux is a different matter, always twiddling and fiddling, trying this and that . I have to agree, it's fun . Going to have to pick one distro for serious use, customise it to my needs and taste then leave it alone . Doesn't preclude having fun with others though .

My curiosity has been tweaked by Mac OS Tiger, pity about the hardware side . Couldn't justify a new machine to the Financial Controller, just for a look see .

353061 2005-05-09 04:30:00 Looks like nothing much has changed since I last used it... *Yawn*

Meanwhile the likes of Mac OS and Linux seem to be bringing out regular updates etc. with new features, cleaner interfaces, and its all available rather than being distributed at a Meeting on DVD to a select few.

Sounds like they've got a lot to deliver on and very little time in which to do it....

353062 2005-05-09 04:38:00 More than a few people sweating blood at MS HQ by the looks of things...

I hope this will provide the impetus for gaming and hardware makers to open up to the open source community more.

353063 2005-05-09 04:55:00 They seem to have spent a lot of time on pretty effects .

And an enormous amount of time on their new filesystem (which, surprise, surprise, is taking longer than they thought) . That filesystem sounds like something dreamed up by a computer scientist and a marketing droid at a boozeup . If it's ever released, expect business to uniformly refuse to use it, except to store any emails, audit records, etc, which they don't want the investigators to find .
