351932 2005-05-05 01:14:00 Me too!
i just checked, and FC3 is aware of that camera, so it could have a good relationship with my laptop! With optical zoom at that price i want one! Are there any left?

Sadly none left at that price.
Closest is $298 at DSE, but they only have stock left in NI shops.
It is still OK at that price, but you need to visit the shop to buy.

351933 2005-05-05 02:11:00 FC3 is known to detect many Canon cameras, including the A-series PowerShots. vinref (6194)
351934 2005-05-05 02:42:00 Yes, but I have an investigation to do in Europe shortly, want a pocket sized camera.
My "SLR-like" Fuji is just too big for travel.
The Nikon with 2 x 512 MB cards will suffice. Alkaline AA batteries means I don't need to take the charger as well.

Plus I like new toys. :)

Would you like a baggage carrier cum slave, only cost you room & board, plus airfares of course. Tourist class is fine, whilst you live it up in First class.????? PJ

351936 2005-05-05 06:26:00 WOW - lots to learn! Thank you all so much for your help, I think I'll get the Canon Powershot A75. :)

I bought a Canon Powershot A75 and am very happy with it (though a bigger screen would be the cream on the cake !) ;)

Nevertheless it is worth mentioning that after I bought it "Consumer" magazine said that the A80 is better than both the A75 and A85. If you want me to check the reasons and comparisons for this just let me know. Sometimes the better features may not be particularly relevant for your needs - however it is worth taking notice of Consumer. :2cents:

351937 2005-05-05 07:40:00 My mother wanted a new camera - the SLR had died so she thought she'd try digital. Foodtown had one on special and my daughter (a photographer) approved it for Grandma's use.

But I sensed a problem. My mum is not the world's most technical person and I had a Very Nasty feeling I'd be first call on the Help Desk front. She went ahead anyway.

Sure enough the camera is fine BUT the supplied card will only take about 6 photos (not enough). Also the printer is not photo quality (me running a cleaning cycle at least got rid of the streaks).

Digital cameras are great for casual snapshots etc and I wouldn't be without one now but they are not a true replacement for film without spending extra on the accessories - memory and possibly a printer. Also, if you are a good photographer who likes to enlarge photos you will have a problem with resolution.

351938 2005-05-05 08:13:00 . . . . but they are not a true replacement for film without spending extra on the accessories - memory and possibly a printer .

Really? The only thing my camera (Olympus C350 Zoom) has is a 16MB XD memory card . I managed to squeeze 75 decent looking pictures out of it at 1024 x 768 pixels . 2048x1024 is a little overkill IMHO but will provide a better quality when resized down .

If you really are worried about printing them couldnt you go to one of those Kodak Print Centres?? Or do they only make small cruddy 4x6 inch photos?

I think printing is where the extra hidden costs are .
Once you get the printer, you really need proper photo paper for best results especially if giving to relatives .
I used Kodak picture paper which I buy on specials if possible .
(eg Kodak Satin quality paper, 25pieces @ $6)
I dont see the point in buying Extra Super Dooper Glossy, Normal Glossy paper does me fine . :2cents:

351939 2005-05-05 09:03:00 "Try and suss out one that has about 3.2 - 4.0 megapixels, 3x or more Optical Zoom. USB output. Takes CF cards or other media like the IBM 1 Gig microdrive."

What camera Made in the last 3 years doesn't have usb output ?
Why would you suggest a 1 gig microdrive (a wonderous piece of miniature technology that it is) for a camera. They are madly power hungry compared to a 1 gig compact flash or sd digital cards and also more expensive.
What amateur photographer is going to fill up a 1 gig card with 3 or 4 megapixel shots without investing in 4 sets of nimh batteries and a charger ?

The digital Kodak camera I had in the first place connected to a Com port. Admittedly it is over three years old. You could probably still buy one of these animals on trademe though

A one Gig microdrive was exactly what one of my clients wanted when they were going to be in the bush for a month with no way of tranferring images off the camera. They did not invest in a charger at that time but about 200 batteries. Try plugging your recharger into a tree. Maybe a water wheel with generator connected may work. This was about 12 months back and maybe they had their reasons.

The main point I wanted to make was that I was hoping Raewyn would not be an "amateur" for too long and wanted to suggest a little to think about.

351940 2005-05-05 09:33:00 Why the hate against Kodak? . . . I have a low spec cheap Kodak(2mp,3xoptical), Takes better or comparible pictures with everything I have seen around the same price, In some cases far better pics .

Once again I must agree with Metla . :D  Except to say that the name 'Kodak' has low status appeal, I suppose; maybe being an American company??! But really, the 2mp, 3x optical camera at my wife's school take terrific photos . Sure, it does not have the extra features of my Canon, but it was much $$cheaper .

Personally I would not get a Sony since their memory sticks are the most expensive way to buy the all important storage . [I have a 512 + 128, and no longer worry about filling up a card . ]
