652826 2008-03-26 23:05:00 Did you put some of those service tags into google?

To see what the mobo might be?

What version of windows (if youre putting windows on it), are you installing on it anyway?

652827 2008-03-26 23:16:00 As a very non technical person!!!! What about running something like "Everest" to see what the computer consists of ? PJ:help: Poppa John (284)
652828 2008-03-26 23:17:00 You can always email ascent at the time of purchase and ask them to check it out .. telling them the motherboard you have.....

HDD manufacturers should have a workaround utility .....

Power cable - should be fine if you lacked those other stuff. The worst it can happen is that the drives don't power up and hence nor does bootup.

652829 2008-03-26 23:26:00 Ok, just looked around and found a product name. It's a Dell GX150 Small Form-Factor Desktop. I've looked at the manual, and it doesn't tell me anything past how to physically change the HDD, which I already know. I don't know what the LBA is, I've looked and can't find it.

There's a yahoo! forum question in google on it, but our IP blocker at work means I can't actually see it. I'm lucky that I can see this site actually, and ascent too, which is nice.

652830 2008-03-26 23:28:00 Hi all.

My work is doing a big purge of their old Dells and I'm looking to take one to use as a file server for music and movies and such. It has one IDE HDD, and no expansion slot. I can get another one in there, and have the data cable to expand for that, but the PSU doesn't have another cable for it.

Are there cables you can buy that expand an existing power cable? Kind of like a power board for HDD's if you get my drift? I know I can get a 750GB HDD for it, but I'm wanting a bit of expandability past that. 1500GB sounds pretty good to me! :drool

Are they selling these, or giving them away? PJ

Giving them away. I don't think I'd pay for them, but it's nice to get something for free. I've been offered more than one... could have a Debian Cluster going on. Parallel computing in my flat doesn't really make too much sense though, so I think I might just take the one. :)

652832 2008-03-27 00:24:00 Find out what the revision / version of the BIOS is on it now.

Might say something like A05 or A06 or similar. Once u get into the BIOS or on the post screen

I would say you'll have to update the BIOS first, if u want a bigger hdd

Depending on what revision is on it now

652833 2008-03-27 00:39:00 BIOS is A10. Looks absolutely ancient compared to others I've seen... Is that newish? Thebananamonkey (7741)
652834 2008-03-27 00:46:00 Once again, utopian is correct, however seagate hard drive to have software which places a layer over the drive at boot, providing access to the entire drive, however I'm not sure if you can get 750Gb IDE drives.

I got 2 SATA 750GB yesterday for a NAS box!

I know seagate has utilities that load up to support drives larger than 137gb if your bios doesn't, so its a bit of a hassle, but its not the end of the world if your bios doesnt support it.

Incidentally, I got a 750gb IDE drive at the start of this year, so they *are* available :D. 750gb is as far as you can go with IDE though.

What operating system do you intend to use? XP requires SP2 to recognise drives larger than 137gb. So if you try install XP on the drive (which does not have SP2 on it), even if you partitioned it, the boot menu will say there is a single 137gb partition on the drive, and you will have lost all your data and partitions. Thats what happened to me anyway (luckily I was just testing to see if this was exactly what would happen, so I didn't lose any data!).

The safest way would be to slipstream SP2 with XP onto a single disc so you are 137gb+ compatible from the start.

652835 2008-03-27 01:06:00 This might be the update (support.dell.com)

Go into the BIOS (into the entry for the hdd), does it say LBA here somewhere?
