The model and the revision (1.0.x or 2.0x) should be etched on the motherboard.

Thanks . 'Himself' will do that, while I hover anxiously over him! Haven't got the hardware yet - it's on its way .

652755 2008-03-25 21:18:00 Have a look on the motherboard - it should say it maybe in white lettering caplocks around the PCI card slots. :) It should say the revision # too. Maybe booting up the computer also tells you.

I've found the hardest part is network. For each to see each other. Hint - install more network protocols off windows, each same workgroup and share something.

If you have Norton Ghost or Acronis True Image - do a image of the HDD after a windows install and the motherboard drivers (but not the windows service pack) since that can update over time. Nor any other utilities like firewall, antivirus or printer drivers cos those version may be updated over time. Motherboard drivers will include all things drivers attached to it like maybe it has a onboard video card, the sound, the network ... ... Maybe include Office too so it saves you time that you don't need to reactivate it provided you restored it back to the same hardware PC. This also works with windows that you don't need to reactivate it.

I just redid my windows 2000 system on a older laptop. Redid the ghost image without installing windows or office or the motherboard drivers. I updated the utilities, firefox and the device drivers. First format in 5yrs, much quicker. Maybe it be a yearly or 2 yearly thing for myself now.

I'll reboot and have a look . I have a very basic network - a wireless g between my desktop & laptop . It took me ages to get it set up the first time, and falls apart relatively often, so I've had a bit of practice .

I planned to do an image when this is complete - was waiting till a little later to ask those questions! As an early question - how big a partition would one need do you think for this image?
R.M. (561)
652757 2008-03-25 21:35:00 I think you can do a partition to partition backup. The 2nd partition may need to be 50-75% of the 1st partition spaced "used". Not total space.

With modern imaging software in Windows you may be could just direct it to a DVD disc and skip the partition requirements..

Edit. For imaging - enable high compression where available.

652758 2008-03-25 22:03:00 I've had a look on reboot, and my version motherboard is Ver 2, BUT when I go to Gigabyte site and try to download the drivers - the file is greyed out - I can't download. Now what? :help: R.M. (561)

Yes - went there, but when I try to download the files, I get the message "Would you like to save this file?' I only have the option to 'Cancel' - the 'Save
file' box is greyed out, in other words, is NOT an option. :(

On further investigation on the Gigabyte site I find info that tells me that I should remove Windows update file 912945. Where on earth would I find that? It is not in 'Add & remove' box in Control Panel.

652761 2008-03-25 22:53:00 Its probably this if you use IE 6 (support.microsoft.com)

It'll be under IE 6 in add/remove program. Tick show updates (If SP2 is installed)

Or use firefox if its installed
