652197 2008-03-27 09:22:00 Cheers.

Now for some new questions....would i be better off buying DDR2 or DDR3 ram? Are there any compatibility problems? Or is the only difference just speed? There isn't much choice with DDR3 since there's only a few out.

Lastly, if i should decided to stick with DDR2, would i be better off with the X38 or P35 chipset? Cause i read somewhere that DDR2 performance using X38 is lower than the performance while using P35 chipset. Or is there a better alternative out there?

Thanks

652198 2008-03-28 21:36:00 I'd go for the dominator RAM from Corsair, The Q9xxx are great 45nm cpu for thermals, however have low multipliers....8x333=2664, which is the Q9450. DDR2800 will give you access to 400 FSB, however thats only 3200mhz, when these chips should really go all the way to 4Ghz on air. You need a board and RAM capable of 500 FSB, so the Corsair 1066 Dominator would be the better choice and ascent has is cheaper??, for some reason?

The rest of the build looks good!

Do you mean this ram?www.ascent.co.nz
Does CAS latency matter? Because the DDR2 1066 dominator has a CAS of 5 while DDR2 800 XMS2 DHX has a CAS of 4...

Also, how do you know for sure if the ram is supported by the motherboard or not? On gigabyte's site, it only shows a select few of ram supported...

652199 2008-03-29 05:02:00 On an Intel system chances are you won't feel any differences. Get the 1066. qazwsxokmijn (102)
652200 2008-03-29 19:42:00 While conceding that there's nothing wrong with your specs. I feel you are buying something that is almost on the way out.
DDR2 ram is becomming obsolete. DDR3 or DDR4 would be a better bet.
I would be looking at a 1600 fsb motherboard. I prefer ASUS.

With the cpu I prefer the X range rather than the Q

The 8800 series vid cards have reached the end of their life.

Of course it all depends on how much you are prepared to spend and how long you want the computer to last. And of course what you use the computer for.

AS for buying parts. I deal exclusively with Ascent and have never had a single complaint. You could save about $200 on a computer if you are prepared to spend days going from shop to shop looking for the cheapest. I don't think it's worth the effort.

652201 2008-03-29 21:32:00 Is DDR 4 available?

I just had a look on Ascent at AMD2 sockets and Intel 775 and DD3 were rare, Asus had like 2 or 3 at like $400+ motherboards, a few at $500 or even $600 was only DD2. Gigabyte had one I thnk with DDR3. 1600/2000 FSB boards. 1060 DDR2 RAM.....

Would you prefer 1600FSB DD3 or 2000FSB DDR2 Ie., AM2 vs Intel 775. I don't overclock. :D

652202 2008-03-29 21:44:00 Looks like there's video cards with DDR 4 on them.

Which is called GDDR4

But not for a mobo.

Ascent had ddr 400 from Adata, last week but I see iit's gone now.

You wont notice the difference between cas4 and 5, 4 is tighter and will give better benchmark results and maybe a frame or 2 when playing a game.
The faster RAM you will notice. Dominator being class RAM is of course on the memory list for that board.

652205 2008-03-30 00:29:00 Not DDR 400, DDR 4

I dont think theyre the same thing

652206 2008-03-30 01:28:00 I'm looking at getting the Asus p5kc, which also has 2 slots for DDR3....Think i'll stay with the DDR2 for the moment though. SolMiester (139)
