| 652275 | 2008-03-24 04:53:00 | Hey, i have to buy some new ram for a friend, on the stick it says DDR 256MB, 333MHZ. Is this Dimm or sd? It did not say on the Card. Jut some background info... Its a older compaq desktop running xp, it has 256 but i want to put a new 512 in there as well. Anyone have a clue? :thanks |

Most RAM sticks are DIMM (dual inline memory module), as it has 2 rows of electrical contacts down the edge (one on each side of the PCB) for contact with the pins in the RAM slot. A SIMM on the other hand (single inline memory module) has contacts down only one side. (and is an older type, so not common now) The RAM chips (black squares) can be on either 1 or both sides of the RAM stick. This is known as SS or DS (single-sided or double-sided) configurations. Usually this does not matter, but in some cases there can be problems when using a lot of double-sided RAM sticks (too many banks of RAM for the controller to handle properly, or at full speed) All common memory used on today's sticks is SDRAM. (Synchronous dynamic RAM) There are 2 main types of this: SDR SDRAM and DDR SDRAM. What you are using is DDR SDRAM. SDR SDRAM is an older, slower type. SDR = Single Data Rate / DDR = Double Data Rate. |
