Committee on Small Body Nomenclature
Comité pour la nomenclature des petits corps célestes
A Committee of IAU Division III

"The Committee for Small Body Nomenclature (Small Bodies Names Committee prior to February 2000) has responsibility, under the authority of the IAU, for the names of the small bodies (except satellites of the major planets) in the solar system . The actual naming is administered, under the guidance of the committee, by the Minor Planet Center (MPC) . . . "

351857 2005-05-04 05:05:00 Very good Steve . I enjoyed that .

Don't tell me you go out in the dark hours measuring occultations and meridians? How else would you know about minor planet observations?

Interestingly, it is an astronomical job which can only be achieved by amateurs . The professionals hog the big telescopes and don't waste their time on minor planets and near-earth objects .

No, I am not an amateur astronomer, but was when I was a kid .
The above link to The Real World was in The New Scientist magazine which has a humour section on the next to last page of every issue . Along with PCWNZ, I am a regular reader of New Scientist .
