653643 2008-03-28 11:04:00 I am currently runninig Win xp sp2. i have 1gb of ram. When i first got my computer the dvd playback was very slow and choppy i used many different programs (power dvd, VLC, Win Media Player etc.) they all had slow playback. Not only dvds but anything i put in the drive would read very slowly. but when i coppied files 2 the hard drive they worked fine. i took my comp 2 my computer guy and he exchanded the drive 4 a new 1 at worked fine until now its happening again! is there any way i can fix this without buying a new drive? 653644 2008-03-28 12:00:00 Welcome to PressF1 :)

Looks like you might either have a bad CD/DVD Drive or not enough RAM.

Please let us know how much RAM you have, your OS and the specs of your computer.

653646 2008-03-28 13:21:00 Hi

This could be a DMA problem so check to see if you have it enabled. For your convience, I will repeat my reply to an earlier thead:

Sounds like the DMA, (Direct Memory Access), is not enabled. If a high speed drive does not use DMA then it will never reach it's rated speed and the performance will depend on the speed of the CPU.

DMA is a method of transfering data to and from memory with it having to pass through the CPU. As you can imagine it speeds things up dramatically.

Here's how to enable it. (>=Click)

1. START>CONTROL PANEL>>SYSTEM>HARDWARE>DEVICE MANAGER>+IDE ATA/ATAPI CONTROLLERS

2. This will now expand to show PRIMARY IDE CHANNEL and SECONDARY IDE CHANNEL.

3. Right click PRIMARY IDE CHANNEL.

4. >PROPERTIES>ADVANCED SETTINGS

5. In the both TRANSFER MODE boxes select DMA IF AVAILABLE.

6. >Ok

7. Repeat for SECONDARY IDE CHANNEL.

8. Close down Control Panel, DMA is now enabled.

9. Try again

653648 2008-03-28 15:44:00 Yes I agree about the DMA, Windows has a habit of downgrading the IDE after i think 8??? read errors or somethng like that. So even if it is enabled it might have downgraded to a lower DMA mode. apsattv (7406)
653649 2008-03-28 18:57:00 i had similar problems a couple of months ago, found out my girlfriends sister had installed itunes and f***ed round with the settings.now s**t hit the fan after this, games would'nt run properly and dvd movies were slow and unstable.eventually it had wiped the dvd/cd drive icon off the computer, this drive is corrupted message, so i panicked and took it to com guy,he uninstalled itunes, replaced disk drive,. now good as new.he said itunes was fine but dont play around with the settings to much.same for everything i guess. sk69ersnz (13476)

653651 2008-03-28 19:31:00 I doubt Itunes would screw a cd or DVD up.

Theres not a lot of settings to configure in it

Besides playback / sharing options / burning / importing options

Sounds like the cd or dvd was screwed before you used Itunes
