653570 2008-03-28 07:52:00 I have the following hdd's in vista:

40gig IDE drive,
120gig IDE drive,
160gig SATA drive.

I just got a new 500gig SATA drive but forgot to get some more SATA cables to hook it up with, so until I can get those, how can i swap the 160gig SATA for the 500gig SATA drive? I tried chucking the cables from the 160 onto the 500gig but it wouldn't show up in My Computer or in Disk Managment. Can someone help me please?!

653571 2008-03-28 07:56:00 Does the mobo support SATA 2?? If the 500 GB is SATA 2??

If it doesnt you have to switch the jumper on the 500 GB to SATA 1

653572 2008-03-28 08:00:00 ummm, not sure, my mobo is - MICRO-STAR INTERNATIONAL CO., LTD MS-7142 1.00 and the drive came fromHere. (friendlycomputer.co.nz) It says nothing about ultra ATA on the drive itself, just serial ATA. Also, there is no jumper on the drive at all, it didn't come with one. springa886 (10558)
653573 2008-03-28 08:03:00 Thats not a SATA its IDE. Well, it looks like IDE to me.

SATA doesnt use 40 pin. So if you were planning on getting a SATA cable for it, it wont go anywhere

Is the 500GB the only hdd in the case now?? If it isnt you have to jumper it properly.

Since I dont think theres anything on it yet, it'll have to be jumpered to slave, if theres a hdd in the case already with something on it

653574 2008-03-28 08:25:00 LOL, ur right! That link was to the wrong page This (friendlycomputer.co.nz) is the right link. I took the drive out and plugd the 160 back in and now its all back to normal, all good. I have a 2.5" external SATA drive and i took the front off it and plugd it into the 500 3.5" drive lol. It installed some software and said it was ready to use but it didn't show up in My Computer. I went to disk managment and its in there but it says "Disk 3 Unknown Not Initialized." So I right click it and select initialize disk and click okay and then it says "The Device is not ready." springa886 (10558)
653575 2008-03-28 08:30:00 I would say the system is only SATA 1.

So one of those boxes besides the power connection must be the jumper to set it to SATA 150.

Turn the system off and change it to SATA 150, then see what happens

Yup, this looks like your motherboard (www.msicomputer.com)

It says SATA 150 there (it supports SATA 1 not SATA 2). SO you have to change the jumper to SATA 150.

If it isnt on SATA 150 now. Does it say K8MM-V on on yours between the 2nd-3rd PCI slot?

653576 2008-03-28 08:37:00 okay, the jumper instructions on the drive say " Master/Slave jumper not required for SATA. Jumpered pins 3 & 4 enable PUIS," but it doesn't tell me where to put the jumper to make it SATA 150!! Any ideas Speedy? This is how the jumper thing is setup:

7531
8642

edit - yeah thats my mobo alright.

653577 2008-03-28 08:46:00 Well it looks like PUIS means power up in standby (I have no idea what that means) !

Does it have a number on it?

Like this ? (www.wdc.com)

MODEL: WD5000AAJS ?

Or is this yours ? (www.wdc.com)

653578 2008-03-28 08:46:00 Does the drive show up in the PC Bios? CYaBro (73)
653579 2008-03-28 08:48:00 I dont think it will if its not jumpered to SATA 150 Speedy Gonzales (78)
