653353 2008-03-27 20:01:00 Hi folks

After 14 years in private practice it is time to dung out the computers. I have removed all sorts of things, like software that is no longer useful, but I also want to get rid of duplicate files.

Could you please recommend software that you have used to do this on your pc's?

How does the software determine duplicates? For example, is it solely on the basis of file name, or does it distinguish between files according to file name and date last modified? I have quite a few files that have the same name, but the files are different versions - all I need to keep at this stage is the final version.

Thanks for any help.

653354 2008-03-27 20:05:00 Just use ccleaner. Run it to get rid of temp files.

Then use the registry option so it removes invalid entries

If you've installed more than 1 version of the same program uninstall the older versions, if theyre in add/remove programs

Altho this may or may not remove the current version as well, but this depends on how good the uninstall program is, on what it deletes

653355 2008-03-27 20:18:00 Oh, I use ccleaner all the time Speedy. No problems there.

I don't think my original post was clear enough. I have got rid of all software that I want to remove, and ccleaner clears up afterwards when you use the registry option, as you say.

What I now want to get rid of are files like documents, photos, movies etc where there are duplicate copies.

Part of my work has been writing documents to a particular format and set of standards, and they have to go through a rigorous quality control process. There are many duplicates of these documents as a result of silly "filing" systems that have evolved over the years.

Frequently I would save a version of a document into a new directory, then "save as" and start amending it according to desired changes. This has left a spray of duplicates all over the place and I want to get rid of them.

653356 2008-03-27 22:47:00 Hi John,

I use EasyDuplicateFinder ( . easyduplicatefinder . com/) which does the job very well . It detects duplicates by the actual files themselves, regardless of the dates modified, file name, etc, and presents them in a list for you to choose which one/s" target="_blank">www . easyduplicatefinder . com/) which does the job very well . Check out the screenshots on their pages .

I am not sure how it would help with the documents you have amended and thus are slightly different, however .

It has a lot of different options including the very handy ability to search specified folders for duplicates rather than the entire hard drive and the ability to print out a list of duplicates .

The program is free .

653357 2008-03-27 23:23:00 Ah, now that looks like what I need, thank you. And it is free too! I like the fact that it gives you a list to select from.

Thanks FoxyMX - will investigate.

653358 2008-03-28 02:24:00 Gulp - not sure what I have bitten off actually. :crying

FoxyMX - that programme has found 2700 duplicate files... I think my energy levels for the dung out have dropped. Looks like a task for a rainy day... (if we ever get one down here). Thanks again - that programme is exactly what I was looking for.

That's why you do searches in little chunks (folders) at a time, and not the entire hard drive. :p

It also helps to do searches for one type of file at a time, eg *.jpg or *.doc, etc, otherwise it's just too overwhelming. :dogeye:

That is a really good idea biting it off in small chunks like that, otherwise I will probably forever find reasons to avoid doing it! :o Thanks again!

653361 2008-03-28 03:02:00 Tell it to leave files in C:\Windows alone, there are a lot of duplicates in there, mainly for backups. :) pcuser42 (130)

Because that is exactly what I experienced the first time I used it. :D
