653325 2008-03-27 09:54:00 Hi, I just redid my computer - its a P3 600Mhz with 320MB laptop running windows 2000. It is much faster after a format and redone.
I don't have .Net Framework installed or Sun Java or Photoshop. I have the Sp4 for my OS and the security updates.

What are the ways of improving the speed?
320MB is the max capacity on my laptop for RAM.

I thought of ridding Firefox and using IE 6 (latest version on windows 2000).
Ridding Zonelarm given that it takes 5MB and vmon.exe of ZA too takes 12MB. Any alternative for ZA?

I am now using version 6.4 Media Player, does version 7 take much more memory? 6.4 right now takes 1.7MB. Is version 7 with the new interface (web integrated) resource hungry?

At the moment I have ~ 150MB free for memory. Running IE without MSN Messenger, AVG doesn't appear to take up much ...

653326 2008-03-27 10:00:00 I just found that each IE window increases the RAM needed. Sooo... is F/F more hungry or about the same? I opened two webpage and each session took up 20MB .. ie., 40MB....

How much available RAM should I aim for?

653328 2008-03-27 10:28:00 Have you got your heart set on Windows?

Because a Linux distro like Ubuntu would run just fine on those specs I'd think?

653329 2008-03-27 11:54:00 Avast Home would be even less hungry than AVG

Foxit Reader instead of Acrobat Reader

Trillian instead of MSN/WL Messenger

Oh and VLC Player rather than WMP maybe
