653261 2008-03-27 06:00:00 For those who helped and advised (and encouraged too!) me yesterday - I'm back - after a fairly fraught day! I won't go into all the details...

The biggest disaster (so far) is that my 'puter doesn't recognise my SATA HDD at this stage. I don't think anything was bumped inadvertantly while we were getting the new drive in place.

Any suggestions for remedies??

I've many other things to be getting on with in the meantime, as you would imagine - but thanks heaps for all the support I've had. Quite an experience - I wouldn't feel nearly so badly next time!

653262 2008-03-27 06:06:00 If you mean when you go to install Windows on it, it needs the sata drivers.

Put them on a floppy (extract them), then put the xp cd in and press F6, when it says to press F6. Then chuck the floppy in

Or enable IDE mode or something in the BIOS first, then try again

653263 2008-03-27 06:27:00 No - I don't want Windows there - this was a secondary HDD with my photos and My Documents there, and that is what I want it to remain as. Quite important to my continued well being...

Do I still need SATA drivers, and if so, where? I don't think I had a cd with this drive, but I'll have another look.

653264 2008-03-27 06:34:00 ?? So, the SATA hasnt got anything on it yet then??

And youre using another hdd to boot into Windows right??

If you are, did you connect the power and data cable (the SATA connection will be / maybe on the mobo), to the SATA hdd??

You need BOTH.

If you have done this, go to control panel / admin tools / computer management / disk management (If the SATA hasnt been formatted yet). Then select the unallocated entry (hopefully its the SATA).

Highlight it then right mouse / format

653265 2008-03-27 06:36:00 Is the C: working yet with windows - is that a IDE or SATA?
Is D: the SATA with your photo's on it?

In my experience (once) SATA goes a bit wonky getting detected for windows setup. I would leave the SATA with your photo's out until windows is working, I assume the C: is the new HDD?

653266 2008-03-27 06:38:00 No - the SATA drive has all my photos and My Documents on it (plus a few other things) - as it had before I started this upgrade . I've just had a look, can't find a cd with drivers for this drive (only for the other external drive - which I haven't looked at yet) .

I had a horrible thought that I had inadvertantly reformated the SATA drive, but no - I don't think so . It is just 'not being seen' at the moment . :(

653267 2008-03-27 06:39:00 If windows is working ... SATA drivers are with the motherboard - the ones you downloaded ...

What is the C: - SATA or IDE? Working?

PS, I would get C: working and then pop your old SATA back in ...

653268 2008-03-27 06:52:00 C is an IDE drive - and is working, praise be! It has the OS on it. At this stage I have it partitioned into 2 drives - but nothing on the second partition yet.

I installed the chipset, the network and the USB drivers as downloaded from Gigabyte. When I tried to install the audio driver, it told me something was corrupt (and no, I have no sound at this stage).

If windows is working ... SATA drivers are with the motherboard - the ones you downloaded ...

Not sure what you mean by the above?? (I didn't expect it to look like that!).

653269 2008-03-27 06:54:00 You shouldnt need sata drivers then. If the SATA isnt C

Just make sure the data and power cable are connected.

Check the BIOS (or the post screen when you reboot press pause). Does the SATA show up here?

653270 2008-03-27 06:55:00 Refer to the last post for link.. get the SATA drivers .. maybe your motherboard needs them as well ... :)

Any reason why the newer HDD is IDE over SATA? I would think that SATA is newer tech..

In the bios have you "enabled" SATA? Mine has that option .....
