Here’s a curly one for you

I’ve been using MS Word ever since it came out (never looked at WordPerfect) so I thought I knew my way around.

Recently I’ve been “tidying up” my laptop where I’m using Win XP Professional with Service Pack 2 and Office 2003. At some stage I fired up Word only to find that the cursor was flashing right on the very top of the page. I checked that the page was in Print view but when I looked at it in Print Preview or the “Whole Page” option in the zoom box it appeared almost square. File>Page Setup displayed all the normal margins and settings for an A4 sheet and altering them didn’t change anything. “I know”, I thought, “All I’ve got to do is delete Normal.dot and when I restart Word it should recreate the Normal template”. Guess what – it didn’t work. To cut a long story short I searched the hard drive and deleted all instances of files starting with “Normal” (I didn’t specify the .dot extension) and displaying the Word logo, and then restarted my Word. No luck. As administrator I created a new user and Bingo, he got the correct blank page! I located his Normal.dot and copied it to relevant folders in my Documents and settings. Still no luck!

Then, for some reason, I went “View > Headers and Footers” and then closed them without typing anything and everything was fine, but for that particular document only. Obviously I could load a previously saved document, delete all the text and then type in new stuff but that’s not really the point. Virus, BOT and other checks have thrown up nothing. Has anyone got any ideas, just so I don’t lie thinking about this in the wee small hours of the morning!

653168 2008-03-27 02:09:00 Hi. Is it the "Show white Space" item? Hover cursor at the top of the page and if you get a double headed arrow thingy, click it. Scouse (83)
653169 2008-03-27 02:21:00 Hi Scouse

That did the trick - why didn't I thinks of that? Shows what late night "tidy ups can do!

Do you qualify for the "Fastest Fix prize that PC World is about to inaugurate?

Thanks
