354522 2005-05-12 20:44:00 "I don't think the success of the iPod can continue in the long term, as good as Apple may be,"

OK folks, have a guess who said it. Yeah, right!

Read about it Here (www.marketwatch.com)

354526 2005-05-13 01:47:00 He may be right - there are several mp3 player things on the market and the market is booming. They are easy to mass produce and some are better and cheaper than iPod. iPod faces the greatest threat from the all-in-one-zilla gadgets - phone, vid & still camera, mp3 player, gps, tv, bumscratcher - Nokia and one of the Koreans are well into building a release model. Apple realised this long ago and has moved into services as well - iTunes. But even that is not safe ground - Yahoo Muzak is much cheaper.

One huge disadvantage for Apple - did they not learn anything? - is it's closed hardware policy. It nearly killed them before, and will do it again I reckon. And this time, it is Linux who will throttle Apple.

354527 2005-05-13 01:50:00 I'd rather my Nokia 2280 could take SD-Cards and could play MP3's than to have to buy an iPod.

Either way, I wouldnt be fully happy until I could load additional software (Like Java apps on the Nokia phones) that could make it do weird and wacky things... maybe that's just me though, as I know many happy Shuffle owners who are loving every bit of the investment $$ spent.

354528 2005-05-13 04:21:00 he could be right,
BUT (news.com.com) and there has been 10million + ipods sold

354529 2005-05-13 05:03:00 10+ million is a good number, but that was yesterday's number . It's tomorrow's number you have to keep thinking about . And Apple has shown everyone there's gold in them thar hills, so the goldrush is on . Even Google is getting into the act somewhat . The market is maturing fast and the competitors are getting more experienced and may catch Apple faster than you may think .

One thing going for Apple is it's coolness and creativity . If it keeps it up, never mind the hardware, cost and closedness - people will keep buying . And so far it is working very well thank you . Apparently, MS PC sales are down but MacOSX-boxes sales are red hot .

354530 2005-05-13 05:10:00 PC sales are down?

Dell just reported increased sales and raised their expected profits . . .

Anyhow, Apple should be able to maintain a large chunk of the market, they already have the brand name assiciated with the service so thats the best possible start, I would say they will have to get more competitive as far as price is concerned (for the ipod) if they want to stay market leader .

Personally I would never buy one just because the price is so far out of whack with what your getting, and I have no intention of buying music online, nor being forced to use itunes just to copy files onto a gloerified harddrive .

That and the fact they look gay .

Gayer then an Elton and a Freddie having a naked embrace .

Gayer then a man with a handbag, leather hat and handlebar moustache .

354531 2005-05-13 05:31:00 Funny you should mention gayness Metla . . .

The only way for Apple to last long is for it to jump into bed with say, Google, Yahoo or, god forbid, MS! Yes . Right now, it's leverage is OSX and iPod/iTunes . They are the coolest things since the last coolest things . And they are hardware and software - both now commoditised to death .

Also they are very isolated and don't involve much more of peoples lives and their wallets like Google and Yahoo (with MS a sickly lamenuts far behind) - search, maps, taxis, financial services, dating, restaurants, meeting your friends, email, blah blah blah .
