Yes some of them look really good, haven't heard of the brand name before, is it well known,? I prefer to spend my hard earned money on high quality overpriced brandnamed stuff. They have a proven track record that is good, with world wide backup, which to me means alot.

354543 2005-05-14 02:42:00 He may be right - there are several mp3 player things on the market and the market is booming. They are easy to mass produce and some are better and cheaper than iPod. iPod faces the greatest threat from the all-in-one-zilla gadgets - phone, vid & still camera, mp3 player, gps, tv, bumscratcher - Nokia and one of the Koreans are well into building a release model. Apple realised this long ago and has moved into services as well - iTunes. But even that is not safe ground - Yahoo Muzak is much cheaper.

One huge disadvantage for Apple - did they not learn anything? - is it's closed hardware policy. It nearly killed them before, and will do it again I reckon. And this time, it is Linux who will throttle Apple.

Vinref, et. al., you may find the following of interest, from the Apple Matters site:

But back to Bill. He also says that what will ultimately kill the iPod (oh, and yeah, the immensely successful Blackberry) is not the Creative Zen, but the mobile phone. The phone is where you will have your music, calendar, address book, all integrated, of course, with Windows Mobile.

This is where Bill could have a point. The standalone Palm is largely dead. A mere memory of the dotcom days when having a Palm 100 was the thing. Now it is either a Blackberry, or Palm-integrated phone. This is the one device that people are carrying around. Throw in a hard-drive and a decent (read Microsoft) user-interface and suddenly the iPod is like the old standalone Palms of the past, relegated to dusty draws and eBay.

I must admit, Bill’s point about phones makes sense. But not because it will be a better product. Rather it is because of the aforementioned corporations who killed the Mac. In this case the corporation are the Nextels, Verizons, and Cingulars of the world. They want in on the digital music game but on their terms. They also control the hardware and here an iPod phone (if Apple were to ever make one) would die. Firstly because the phone providers control the shelf space, and secondly because they have a say concerning what software goes on their phones. Even if a non-Apple phone running iTunes were to come out they will want to dictate the price and get their cut.

354544 2005-05-14 03:01:00 apple are in conjunction with motorola at the moment producing an iTunes mobile phone plod (107)
354545 2005-05-14 04:45:00 An Apple/Motorola iPod phone would be very interesting to see. I wonder what new spin Apple would put on it. It is up against Nokia who has a lot of experience with experimental phone gadgets in the past, as well as the very keen Koreans. vinref (6194)

354547 2005-05-14 06:14:00 Plod just likes to fish, and when the biggest fish, viz. Metla, takes the bait, he is like a kid reeling in his first big snapper. But now the fish doesn't take the bait and does something very clever. like this news item (www.iol.co.za).

Thats funny, i thought I was the one doing the fishing by calling the iPod gay......

354548 2005-05-14 09:17:00 I have heard that the battery in an ipod can only be replaced at the Tech centre. It costs a bomb plus service time.

I asked the guy at Noel Lemming a while back if this was true. He looked shocked, rang ipod and they confirmed it.

Sounds like Apple will kill themselves 18 to 24 months down the track when all these little batteries start to die and the users get caught with a big bill for replacement.

Can kinda hear the howling now.

well ipods have been out longer then 2 years, and only a little howling.
How i solved that problem was to buy the extended warranty within the first year, warranty covers battery failure, A battery that falls under 50% of life = failure, which means replacement battery under warranty

Yeah, I assumed that Apple was ahead of the game. This is good to see - build on the momentum while you got it.

Now Apple has to counter the XBox360...
